September 2024 PNW Weather Discussion

Recommended Posts

I’ve posted about it in the other sub-forum but just posting it here because it’s so notable. Typhoon Yagi just made landfall at about 125 mph on the northern coast of Vietnam over the cities of Hai Phong and Ha Long. This is an area that hardly ever gets such strong typhoons and the videos of the high winds and damage are sobering. I hope people there are staying safe!

ETA: a lot of tree damage in Hanoi, with thousands of trees down including one historic tree near a cathedral. Damage in Ha Long looks bad, lots of roofs torn up and a huge boat was overturned.

85/58 yesterday…72 here after a low of 58 again this morning. Smoke definitely put a damper on the heat the last couple days. Could’ve gotten close to or hit 90 yesterday and definitely hit 90 on Thursday.

For me the dampness has been the worst part of it.  The air has just been noticeably wet.   My air conditioner has been putting out insane amounts of water the last couple of days.

I saw video of that yesterday and it was ridiculous.  Stuff was just being destroyed by the wind.  One part of the video showed a guy who had fallen over literally being blown helplessly down the street along with the motorcycle he had just been blown off of.  This in the midst of one of the quietest hurricane / typhoon seasons on record globally speaking.

Yeah, normally that area is somewhat protected by land masses to the east but Yagi took a perfect path to maintain strength just grazing the northern side of Hainan. The South China Sea is also extremely warm right now which contributed to Yagi becoming one of only a handful of Cat 5’s recorded there.

One thing about our obesity epidemic is most Americans don’t have to worry about being blown down the street.

Seriously though, I have never seen anything like it.  He managed to get into a sitting position and was still being blown down the street.  You could hear somebody laughing their azz off.

It had to happen eventually.  This season really has been an enigma.  They think they have figured out why long track storms haven't been happening, but the short track ones has to be something different.

Temps are way short of model projections.  Yet another high temp knocked down by smoke.  Kind of cheating, but I'll take it.

Based on the typhoon rules, a typhoon not recurving out to sea and making landfall in Asia means a west coast trough and east coast ridge. This is not 100% but it usually happens. Look for the downstream effects to produce a sustained trough out here.

Purdy!

When I was a kid, you could go over the border any time you wanted.  I can remember one time my older cousins decided to do that when we were all visiting our aunt in Everson.  They kind of looked like stoner types so the border agents completely tore the car apart looking for whatever.  When they didn't find anything they let us go through.  Fun times!

I went to Leavenworth in December 2011 and there was snow on the ground, maybe 3-4”. It was dry with a cold inversion when we were there.

Maybe leftover from December.  So perhaps the inversion made December dry.  I was in Bellingham then and I don't remember much from that month

I think you can add a few more pukes to that.  The humidity has driven me nuts this summer.  Last night the drain plugged up our air conditioner and the floor got soaked with water it was sucking out of the air.  Just disgusting.

Nice! In case you were unaware, the flat-topped peak, Table Mountain, is surprisingly easy to access, despite how daunting it looks from a distance. There is an established and marked trail all the way to the top.

Yeah it’s very possible it could have been leftover snow from late November. It was still winter like and nice due to the cold and frost from the ice fog on the old

crusty snow.

Not a bad GFS run. Not very wet, but as long as we get a little rain and cool down the big rains can wait until October.

Shoot, I almost went over there earlier after the kids soccer games but decided to come home and mow instead since the grass is growing at an insane rate. Otherwise I could have reported live the situation with the smoke!

Fun fact, Lake Goodwin and Lake Shoecraft are joined by a canal that runs under West Lake Goodwin Road. As a kid I would take my fishing boat through there to fish Shoecraft as well. It dries up in the summer though so you have to go through early in the spring and it’s still only about a foot deep. I always thought it was the coolest thing ever going under the road and go to a different lake without even getting out of the boat!
