With mature +QBO/niña this winter, it’s possible the NPAC could amplify sufficiently without stratospheric help, although it never hurts. 5 1 Quote Live Weather Cam: https://www.youtube.com/live/KxlIo8-KVpc?si=xKLCFYWbZieAfyh6 PWS Wunderground https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KMDBETHE62 PWS CWOP/NOAA: https://www.weather.gov/wrh/timeseries?site=F3819&hours=72 "Western troughing literally kills people at this time of year. Dave
It was an ugly drive back from Bend. My car was covered by ash and it was super smoky/yucky in Bend. On the way back there were lane closures, delays, pilot cars, fire trucks, helicopters, etc. There are plenty of new fires, unfortunately. Hope we can get some relief in the next few days with cooler temps and perhaps some rain. 1

There was another comment about the 2° margin between something significantly icier and not, quite a bit of truth to that when you factor valley shadowing and how our geography makes for some epic inversions for a six month window. When you read up on the Cordilleran ice sheet, you learn how easily and quickly that formed in the early throws of previous glaciations. I read this as “Covington ice sheet” at first and had to do a double take! 1
