I remember in 2020 people were saying smoke allows radiational cooling while effectively blocking sunlight during the day.  A very effective cooling agent.

Kinda how Nuclear Winter operates. Wishing we never get to experience such madness firsthand.

Yeah NE side of the fire is probably done progressing, and it should be pretty hard for the current active area to get very far, but with a strong wind it will be able to.

Most of it looks something like this but a little more dead by now, this photo is from Google Street view from just a month ago. No photos of the area in my camera roll recently so Google will have to do lol.Screenshot_20240912-205652_Maps.thumb.jpg.f27fc7e86c6c2b22bfcb9d242ec196ad.jpg

The SMELL of Ponderosa is the best of any evergreen tree BARNONE! I hope some survived , they are much stronger and durable than west side evergreen trees at least, owing to the thicker bark I believe

For some reason SE WA  or at least South of Colfax and North Central Idaho did really well that winter.

Lewiston even did very well in Feb 2021 and they sometimes get skunked.

Was a fun V Day with the fam.  That was some of the weirder snows I've experienced.  Very dry and blowing off of roofs. Must have had a good outflow with this storm.

It's funny you call that storm weird because to me it was the only storm that ever felt "normal" to me (relative to what I grew up with in the Midwest).

1988 ended up being a near-perfect summer analog out this way, FWIW. Basically a genetic clone in terms of temps, lack of precip/convection, regional circulation pattern, etc.

1988 was also a rapidly maturing +QBO/Niña near solar maximum following a strong Niño. Has to be a leading analog, IMO.

Always fun to see the analogs for a given winter season.  I was too young to remember but looked up that winter and saw that was the blast the area got end of Jan into Feb 89.  One difference from an ENSO perspective is that was a strong nina and we'll probably end up moderate at best.

All relative I guess.  I'm used to the cascade concrete but that first storm on the 13th I remember it being odd seeing roof tops in my neighborhood and mini snow drifts from the blowing snow.  I'm sure folks up north in Whatcom Co its a bit more normal at least for W WA.

Let’s hope not. Nuclear war wouldn’t be worth the epic winters!

I dunno know. Growing up we burned apple wood in our stove for a few winters. It had a gentle, sweet smell. I always slept with my window open. Having some of that smoke gently drifting in my room was a great way to fall asleep.

January 2012 was a pretty good one too, somewhat forgotten about since it’s mostly remembered for the devastating ice storm. That was about 10” of snow with over 1” of ice…we don’t typically get severe ice storms as often as western Oregon. One of the more memorable weather events in my lifetime.

I remember the convergence zone the next day after the main event went through dropped like 6 inches of snow here. That was defiantly a good week for the puget sound region.

That was the only time I've seen it go snow, freezing rain, snow since I've lived here.  The trees here looked downright scary from being so weighted down.  Thank God there was no wind when they were like that.

Felt like Alaska that day, deep snow with snow falling and temps in the mid 20’s (maybe even low 20’s) if I remember correctly.

I remember there was snow falling with unusually low temps alright.  We have had some beastly quick hitting cold air masses in recent years.  Dec 2021 was nice in that the cold dug in for a while.

Pretty fun seeing such a strong consensus for us to have a good winter.  As I've mentioned before Weatherbell shows it being an exceptionally cold winter here.  Beyond just typical ENSO forcing.

I'm happy to see January looking good.  That month has been tremendously underachieving this century so far.  Historically January far exceeds any other winter month for depth of cold, duration of cold, and snowfall.
