That was probably the best case of an AR turning to snow ever recorded in this region.  Incredible transition from mild to cold.

December 1974 was another one where that happened, but with much more mundane cold air to work with.  One of the big snows I remember from my childhood.

I remember that one because I was doing my friend’s paper route for him while his family was out of town. I had a written route list on notebook paper that melted in the rain the first day. We got a foot of heavy wet snow that night and I had to do his route in the snow and also trying to guess which houses got the paper. There were some unhappy customers.

You must be about my age then.  I think that snow was a total surprise, but I'm not totally sure on that.  It was certainly a marginal, and poorly understood situation back then.

Some one-on-one time with our middle child. All week she was looking forward to a hike with just her and I.

Very cool.  I'll bet it's pretty hard to do something with just one, but I can see where that would make them feel special for the moment.

This is good for your job as well, right?

Yeah, it’s a love hate thing when the rain starts going everyday. Get lots of overtime but also have little to no free time during those months. December and January last winter I only had a few days off.

Im 62 so I was 12 at the time. I do think the snow was a surprise. I remember another event from maybe a couple years earlier that you’ve talked about before as well - much colder, dry drifting snow. I remember waking up to that one with our power out which never happened in that house.

This winter could be a lot different.  We shall see!

January 1972.  D**n that was a nice one!

I think that is where my love of snow followed by cold and clear weather came from.  Just a straight up fantastic event.  I was only 8 at the time so it was uber special.  I think there was 16 inches where I was living at the time.  The thing I remember most was the epic bus ride home since that hit in the afternoon on a weekday.  It took hours and we had to take an alternate route.  By the time I got home there must have been 8 to 10 inches and it was full blown dark.

I think if anything we’re due for a truly wet winter. Every winter has its week or two deluges but it’s been awhile since we’ve had a +50” rainfall year here.

We're due for a winter that is persistently cold as well.  We keep getting these ones where just part of one month has pretty all of the action.  Don't think this will be the wet one, although it could be very wet leading up to the good stuff.

2022-2023 was persistently cold. That winter had so many small snowfalls and sub 40 highs. The late December blast was pretty impressive even though we only had like 3/4” of snow.

My UW grad son is taking us (and his brother who is a Coug) to the Huskies game today... he says the best part is the massive tail gate party they have before every home game.    Gorgeous day for all the festivities on lake at Husky stadium.  Not so sure about the Huskies though. They better figure out a way to be more disciplined after last week's penalty fest in the Apple Cup.   And how about those Cougs last night!

Cougs undefeated. They could find their way into the playoff if they beat Boise in a couple week and Oregon St later and remain undefeated.  Last night was a squeaker.  they're becoming my surrogate west coast team (I'm a South Carolina grad)

It was ok.  I still think Dec 2021 was the highlight of the decade so far.  Obviously we are more due for a cold January than anything.  Maybe that cold wave last winter broke the ice on that.

Guess I'll take up the mantle a bit for Jesse since he's gone, but the PDX UHI never ceases to impress. It pretty much takes an act of God to pull off a cool low there now.

52 there while Troutdale hit 46, Vancouver hit 45, and Hillsboro hit 43.

Not even sure how they pulled that off.

Haha, Neil is older than me!  I met him in 1967 when he was with the Buffalo Springfield.  He actually bought a guitar I owned that day and played it that night at the concert.

Wow very cool!
