October 2024 PNW Weather Discussion

Pretty crazy temp gradient thought the Puget Sound Basin today.  Running 10+ degrees lower north of Tacoma than from Tacoma south.  SEA will start out with a minus this month.

I always like the first sub 40 low, but first frost is even better.

Anyone else with citrus or sensitive fruit trees that they are caring for over winter? I know my lime won’t like 35° and can see damage from a hard frost, but my fig trees should be good to 12 hours of 25° and fared well out doors over the past year.

Last winter got seriously cold.  I think it was below 25 for a good many consecutive hours.

I know you want Everett to be the fig capitol of the world, but I'm not so sure it will work out well. 😁

There are even productive fig trees in Bellingham. Though I wonder if last winter’s extreme cold might have damaged them.

The desert king variety that is common in western Washington is hardy to zone 7, 0-5 °F. The low teens that we had last winter were no problem. Even in the event that it did get to 0 °F I bet the tree would survive, it just might need some pruning.

Bellingham had sustained sub 15 temps with high winds and very dry air though.  Not sure if wind and dp make a difference with those or not.

Yeah, it’s amazing how after even a cold winter they rapidly put out new foliage and then fruit in the fall. One summer in Bellingham I stayed at a house that had a fig tree, they were great!

There are a lot of them in Portland. Most are the variety that has green fruit even when they’re ripe, but I think I saw purple figs once or twice.

My tree died to the ground in winter last year. First time doing that. January did a number on it.

How much recovery did you get this year?

There are some in the Seattle area that are 30 ft tall and must be 20-30 years old. So they've survived everything the 21st century has thrown at them.

Whole bunch of new growth from the base. About 5 ft tall. Will need to prune it way back to provide structure again. This tree is against the house too, so it is protected... didn't matter with 4 days of single digits.

Depressing. I would be very surprised to see any in MBY. We’ve had some good rains already, and it’s now cool enough, with short enough days, that the forest floor is very unlikely to dry out until next spring.

It's called clown range for a reason.
