Very impressive cold front today and with almost no precip.  80 at PDX while it's 60 at SEA.  Mid levels will be unseasonably chilly by late tonight.

Chilly day.

I'm fascinated by how today played out.  Did not see that temp crash from the north coming.  By late tonight it will be below freezing in the mountains again.  Just something I like about this.

Anyone else with citrus or sensitive fruit trees that they are caring for over winter? I know my lime won’t like 35° and can see damage from a hard frost, but my fig trees should be good to 12 hours of 25° and fared well out doors over the past year.

my date palms will need a smudge pot

Do you recommend that I start growing lime here?

Did somebody say SNOW?

Wow!  There is one variety of figs that grow in zone 5.  That includes parts of Wisconsin and South Dakota!

The only "sweet" at grandma's house was Fig Newtons. I quickly hated that sh@@t.

Given that we won’t see a regional cold outbreak until the early 2040s, you might want to try your hand at dragonfruit.

My neighbor recently planted palm trees. I'm interested to see how they do.

There's plenty of palm trees here. Most look like they are starving , but there are a few semi healthy looking ones. In general, you need to grow them on the coast at least Florence south to get healthy palms. The southern Oregon coast can grow some very nice ones. In the internal valleys you need to get to about Redding for some beefy ones. I anticipate that to migrate northerly over the years. 😐

It was very windy with the east winds yesterday down here but today was very calm with almost no wind at all.

Vitamin D pills have been doing wonders for me lately. Never even considered taking any until now despite living in Seattle all my life.

I think it can hit anyone at any age in this part of the country.  I think it finally caught up to me in my late 30's/early 40's.  I lived in the sun belt for the first 22 years of my life.  So, I don't know if that delayed or sped up the process.  By the time I got checked for it, my vitamin D levels barely registered in my blood work.  I could barely stay awake and function.  I had to go on 2 rounds of prescription level Vitamin D to even get up to the lower end of the acceptable range.  Prescription level is 50,000 IU vs. a regular daily is around 2,000 IU.  I just take it year round now (at my doctor's recommendation.

I've also picked up SAD over the past 5 years or so, its gotten to the point I need to get a therapy light for this winter.  I'm going to make a more serious effort to get outside a lot more this winter, hopefully I can turn things around.

My buddy in Asheville (closer to Black Mountain actually) was finally able to get down to a gas station in Black Mountain today (the only gas station that has been able to open) to get gas and supplies.  They are up in the hills just below the Blue Ridge Parkway, so they avoided the flooding.  But, they haven't had power, and had to rely on a neighbor's well for water.  He said in some ways its not nearly as bad as what the news is showing, but in other ways its a lot worse.

Been watching the weather in the SE, and it looks like they are trying to decide if another one is going to fire up.  It doesn't look like it will be major,, but looks like for now it might hit the big bend area and cross over to the Georgia Coast, then run up the coast, if it forms at all. I am catching a flight from Atlanta to Charleston on Monday, and hopefully it does not impact the flight.

Lots of Palm trees in SW BC. The ones below are in Vancouver BC.  They became popular in the mid to late 80s.

“The palm trees can be credited to Rudi Pinkowski, a palm enthusiast living in Vancouver.

In the mid to late 80s he approached the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation with the idea to plant the hardy palms along Beach Avenue, the Park Board tells V.I.A.

"Originally there were only around 12 palms planted but they turned out to be so popular that more were added over the years," the Park Board adds.”

I hear you on this.  The thing that really gets to me is when it's gloomy in the spring.  When I was younger I loved the darkness in the winter, and am still ok with it, but for some reason the spring thing gets me now.

The other views of the mountain are much whiter.  The part you can see from here is still very heavily glaciated.

Hopefully we can have a proper windstorm. Maybe the rare blowdown event.

You all can have it on the west side. Which is totally fine with me. Not interested in anything that keeps me from working at home or damages property.

Speaking of Camp Muir.  Temp has dropped to 35 there with a recent gust to 102.  The temps have been varying pretty sharply up there with the quick hitting cold air masses.

Yeah for sure, I struggle with gloomy springs as well.  I think I need to start budgeting a trip up to Hawaii or Arizona in the spring.  I still love the darkness of winter even though my body is not too thrilled with it.
