I hear you on this.  The thing that really gets to me is when it's gloomy in the spring.  When I was younger I loved the darkness in the winter, and am still ok with it, but for some reason the spring thing gets me now.

Nothing like 15 hours of graylight in June.

Ugh.

I will say that could result in a 2010 type reversal if it were to happen.

Same for me. My vitamin D levels were pretty low and ever since I started taking them I’ve felt a lot better mentally.

Temps actually looks seasonable or even coolish for the first week of this month.  Even a decent rain thrown in on Friday.

September ended the month right at the 1991-2020 normal of 62.6F. Marine inversions and locally enhanced northwesterlies off the sound kept highs low at the airport despite ridging.

I think it can hit anyone at any age in this part of the country.  I think it finally caught up to me in my late 30's/early 40's.  I lived in the sun belt for the first 22 years of my life.  So, I don't know if that delayed or sped up the process.  By the time I got checked for it, my vitamin D levels barely registered in my blood work.  I could barely stay awake and function.  I had to go on 2 rounds of prescription level Vitamin D to even get up to the lower end of the acceptable range.  Prescription level is 50,000 IU vs. a regular daily is around 2,000 IU.  I just take it year round now (at my doctor's recommendation.

I've also picked up SAD over the past 5 years or so, its gotten to the point I need to get a therapy light for this winter.  I'm going to make a more serious effort to get outside a lot more this winter, hopefully I can turn things around.

My buddy in Asheville (closer to Black Mountain actually) was finally able to get down to a gas station in Black Mountain today (the only gas station that has been able to open) to get gas and supplies.  They are up in the hills just below the Blue Ridge Parkway, so they avoided the flooding.  But, they haven't had power, and had to rely on a neighbor's well for water.  He said in some ways its not nearly as bad as what the news is showing, but in other ways its a lot worse.

Been watching the weather in the SE, and it looks like they are trying to decide if another one is going to fire up.  It doesn't look like it will be major,, but looks like for now it might hit the big bend area and cross over to the Georgia Coast, then run up the coast, if it forms at all. I am catching a flight from Atlanta to Charleston on Monday, and hopefully it does not impact the flight.

Have friends in Pisgah Forest just beside Brevard.  They are elevated too, and away from a river.  Their road was cut off in one direction but can get out after sawing some downed trees in the other.  Get this, them and both their two neighbors never lost power, just lost internet and cell service.  It came back yesterday and we facetimed. They are on a well and septic so good there too.  Their one neighbor had just gotten up and walked out of their bedroom to the bathroom friday morning during the height of the storm and a tree crashed through the bedroom and would've killed them if they were still in bed.  Other than that, all the services in the valley near them are either destroyed, damaged or still closed due to services outages.  They are going to be spending the next week or two starting today in Myrtle Beach (ironically away from destruction) with family just to get away from the carnage and bad vibes

Looking back at 2022, what whiplash we had that season. October had a mean temp of 54.3 at Silver Falls and was a +5.2 departure. November had a mean temp of 36.0 and was a -5.5 departure.

I have no memory of a cold snap the end of last October, but it looks like there definitely was one. Looks like we had five straight sub freezing lows to end the month including a 46/25 day.

Some of the lakes are actually pretty good. I fish with my girlfriend’s dad and he caught a 5 pounder last weekend. They must eat the stocked trout.

That's not bad at all. I haven't fished much for largemouth around here, just small mouth on the Willamette, Umpqua, and John Day. It was fun in Oklahoma though.

Some of the lakes are actually pretty good. I fish with my girlfriend’s dad and he caught a 5 pounder last weekend. They must eat the stocked trout.

Excellent bass fishing up this way.  Southern Vancouver Island is well known for its Smallmouth. They can exceed 7-8lbs in Shawnigan Lake.

Fall is one of the best times of year to catch good size smallmouth bass in the Willamette River.

Bass fishing in W. Washington? You must really be hardcore.

My 5yr old caught a nice smallmouth up at Lake Whatcom this summer!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I have no memory of a cold snap the end of last October, but it looks like there definitely was one. Looks like we had five straight sub freezing lows to end the month including a 46/25 day.

We had 8 freezes in a row at the end of last October.  Shawnigan Lake officially measured 5.5” of snow with at least a trace on the ground for 8 days.

I was thinking about largemouth bass. I'm not surprised there is good smallmouth water.

How quickly some forget! No snow here but I had a string of hard freezes IMBY in October. Will have to go back and check how cold it got, but pretty sure I saw some readings in the mid-20’s.

It's called clown range for a reason.

It was a shock to the system with just how fast things turned!

Total drought-and-torch-fest until late October, sticking snow by the first week of November. Lawns never greened up that fall. Went from brown and baked to brown and frozen.

My lake friend and I growing up would spend days at a time in our little fishing boats searching for beasts of largemouth bass…Here is one he caught (some time in the early 90’s) but there were many! Such great times!
