I've been catching up on Minnesota weather history to see what the high (or low) water marks are for the climate. Just came across March 1843, which blows our Jan 1950 way out of the water. Andrew would be proud. A monthly average of just an astonishing 4F, an ungodly 27F below normal. Temps well below zero nearly all month right down to the turn of April. Insane.

The season of meandering, city-off lows is here. After a hectic tax season, taking a long weekend in Kelowna next weekend. Low to mid-70s would be perfection.

Nice damp morning across the east side.   Amounts are probably meager but at least we didn't completely waste this trough.

Calm with low visibility and light rain here...  our Japanese maples always droop low with weight of the water on the leaves in this situation.

The Japanese maples around here could use some water. There are leaves already falling off some of them. 😕

Trees in general aren’t doing well this year due to the dryness. Foliage is thinner than normal and leaves are a bit smaller. Need some of that North Bend magic.

Another beautiful day in Oahu.

I think my wife is convinced that at the very least we need to spend some extended time here.

80º with trade winds easing a bit. Had some early morning showers which were actually quite lovely. I could see how an atmospheric enthusiast of the highest order might actually enjoy the nuances and microclimates offered by Islands.

Always thought the weather on Oahu was super boring growing up there. But I moved here and realized it's waaay more boring except for the occasional snow event and a couple of t-storms. lol Btw, it rains WAAAAAAY more in Hawai'i than the PNW! The difference is, you can drive 10 miles and find sun. The microclimates are amazing! I spent younger years growing up in Hawai'i Kai (East side, mostly dry) and the other half in Kailua (Windward side...rained nearly every day...mainly in the morning). Very different climates about 8 miles away separated by the Ko'olau mountains that capture the moisture from the trade winds. There are also occasional brushes with hurricanes. I went through both, Iwa and Iniki (which destroyed Kaua'i, btw).

My favorite microclimate is on Big Island, the Kona side. Mauna Loa blocks the trade winds which promotes afternoon convection. It does get "voggy" when Pele is doing her thing, but it makes for the best sunsets! Btw, the Big Island has 12 of the 13 climate zones on earth (arid, desert etc.) including glacial!

Problem has been the relentless westerly flow this spring. We haven’t had a single cloudy/rainy day since February.

The precip that has fallen has been spotty/convective with sun+warmth+downsloping wind leading to excessive evaporation. Throw in the residual stress from heat/drought in 2024 and it’s probably the most stressed I’ve seen trees since the 2008 drought.

This ULL coming Sun-Tues is our first break from upper level W/NW flow since it was cold enough to snow. If we screw this up it’s going to be a rough summer for the biosphere. The pattern progression in the LR is very dry for this region, and I’m very skeptical of seasonal models/outlooks projecting a wet summer. I’m not seeing that at all.

We drove over the saddle in December and multiple times in February over the years.     Always had wind swept fog and cold.    Like another planet with no vegetation up there.

It didn’t last too long but it’s the heaviest rain I’ve seen in awhile. In a normal spring it would be a fairly uneventful shower lol

Yeah I was watching it drizzle across the water earlier and trying to will it this way. Didn’t work.

Lotta lightning today in the Bluegrass State. Severe warnings and all. Life went on pretty much as normal.

Makes our regional freakouts over our "was that a plane or was it thunder?" level storms seem all the more hilarious.

Looks like gonna be a wet Kentucky Derby! 🌧️ 🐎

Looks like a decidedly warmer than average first half of May setting up east of the crest. Unusually tight thermal gradient between the intermountain west and the Pacific for this time of year; almost 30dam thickness deficit across 200 miles from the 7th to the 13th alone. From this gradient we get a sizeable jet and a tremendous thunderstorm pattern for the Blue mountains of northeastern OR (site of initiation) and north/eastward into Spokane and Boise and all of ID on a recurrent diurnal basis for over a week. Also stout marine layers on the coast, save for extreme NW WA on the Olympic peninsula where disturbances sideswiping the region and the colder air aloft could mix out the clouds.

A pattern change toward a cooler and potentially wetter one is still on track for the 11th and beyond, starting in the NW and progressing SE as a sharp trough progrades into the continent. Warm season circulations seem to be dominating early after the speedy dismantling of the NH SPV this March.
