Went outside and to watch the lightning. It is going an unusual direction. Typically they split coming down our local mountains and pass to our South East heading towards Lewiston or Pullman OR travel north but further west of us.

It seems to be heading ESE.

Do you know the variety of blueberry?

Been thinking about the dumb "6-7-8" pattern to our winters, and yeah, I think we just might have a good year in front of us. Wasn't someone sharing something that had an analog that showed the summer of '49 in the mix?

Vaccinium corymbosum, the northern highbush blueberry, which is native to Eastern North America. It is the parent species of the cultivated blueberry. There are blueberry farms near where I harvest them on public land. Birds eat some of the cultivated blueberries and spread their seeds. What sprouts has reverted to wild form (smaller, sweeter, more flavorful berries).

I smell smoke.  Nothing says August like smoke. The first half of summer wasn't bad but the final month is often a grind.

Skies were pretty smoky today. Didn't expect that actually

Is there any reason it reverts to wild form? Does the cooler/drier warm season affect that in any way?

Models have flipped and now it's the Euro showing triple-digit heat in the long range while the GFS is more moderate.

Seems likely we're in for a hot period in the August 10-15 time frame.

Recessive genetic characteristics in the cultivated ones. Dominant traits reassert themselves in seedlings.

Peak blueberry season was nearly four weeks later this year than last.

As we enter August, it wonderful we haven't had any major wildfires, much like the past few years.  It really hasn't been those terrible days upon days of smoke like in 2020 and 2021. Hopefully those will remain outliers. I used to do daily fire reports here, so I have years worth of data (because I'm a nerd).

The smoke models so far don't show any major smoke events for the Pacific Northwest for days (as fires remain at their current state).  No major impacts for the Western parts of Washington or Oregon as the moment, but as we've seen in the past, southern Oregon tends to erupt.  Let's hope that does not happen.  So far BC's fires have been minimal compared to previous years.

The big producers of smoke are the boreal forests in Canada hitting the midwest of the US.

Here's to hoping for a minimal smoke summer/fall. :)

SEA finished +.8 for July. Since 2012, only 2017 and 2020 saw summers where both June and July were cooler than this year.

Nothing remarkable, just another stat that illustrates 1) the ridiculous torchiness of the past dozen summers, and 2) how summer 2025 has been mild without major heat. A nice change of pace for those who were tired of all the big heatwaves last July, 2023, 2022, 2021, etc.

O the snow, the beautiful snow!
Filling the sky and the earth below!
Over the house-tops, over the street,
Over the heads of the people you meet,
Dancing, Flirting, Skimming along.
Beautiful snow! it can do nothing wrong.

Indeed, that's all we can go by.

Taking a look at PDX for example, here are their highest temps and longest 90+ streaks through the first two months of summer going back to 2013.

2025

Hottest: 97

Longest: 2 days

2024

Hottest: 104

Longest: 7 days

2023

Hottest: 98

Longest: 3 days (twice)

2022

Hottest: 102

Longest: 8 days

2021

Hottest: 116

Longest: 5 days

2020

Hottest: 100

Longest: 2 days

2019

Hottest: 98

Longest: 2 days

2018

Hottest: 100

Longest: 9 days

2017

Hottest: 101

Longest: 3 days

2016

Hottest: 100

Longest: 3 days

2015

Hottest: 103

Longest: 6 days

2014

Hottest: 99

Longest: 2 days

So every summer since 2014 had been hotter to this point, and all but 3 had longer streaks of 90+ days.

Redmond has failed to hit triple digits so far this summer. That puts 2025 in company with 2019 as the only years since 2012 that didn't hit 100 through July.

I used Redmond for your area because the NWS Bend stations are missing tons of data.

Eh I’m not really interested in random thresholds, it’s been another warm summer for most of the region. Already admitted it’s not record warmth. image.png.22bd38b2eb11633a156e8fbd5a4b5133.pngimage.png.15cf1f552c53576dcddbaa70550eb0c5.png

I don't think it's fair or intellectually honest to call 100 (or hottest temp, take your pick) a "random threshold".

It literally has not gotten as hot this summer as it got all those other ones since 2012. Been a lot of warm weather, but no major heat - which was the point you took issue with.
