Its actually been trending the wrong way on the EPS in the long range.

Longer range gefs gets even better.  This would be more in line with the euro weeklies, wouldn’t it?

But its been trending the wrong way... and that is a deep trough in the East still.    I think it will come eventually but sort of feels like our normal early February timing again.

Deeper trough in the East.   I am looking at the last 5 or 6 runs... still definitely in chasing carrot mode.   I won't be allowed to comment on this unless its positive so I will say its coming but not until early February.

Last three runs sped up the retrogression around the 15th. That’s all I’m looking for at this point. Obviously it’s not there yet.

OK... its coming in the next 10 days.   Lock it in!

I just won't comment on long range... its pointless anyways.    But I genuinely feel like it will be coming and its just a matter of timing.

I'm only focusing on mountain snowfall now, driving me nuts waiting for deeper back country snow for riding.  The area is like riding has plenty at 6k feet but getting there is tough when the snow is marginal at 3k feet. The creeks aren't snowed over yet.

No I honestly do see what you’re talking about. Slightly trending towards a troughing signal in the east is not good for us. It is so far out at this point though it’s hard to be excited or disappointed about it anyways.

We can’t really get onboard with anything until we’re getting consistent signals within like 7-10 days across the board. We’re still in the same boat as we’ve been all season. Long range teases but never close enough to get excited about. Atleast with this there’s a more realistic path to western troughing with potential retrogression.

Plus we have seen retrogression work out so consistently in late January and early February in recent years and we seem to be on track again.

It’s almost become engrained into climo for February to work out in the last 20 years…

New thread I guess....

I had a vision last night while hallucinating that we would partially salvage this shiit winter with a region wide major 2' snow in late January

HNY!!!

also last night we had police helicopters flying around until 3am trying to get the fireworks to stop, it would for like a minute and start right back up, helicopters again, rinse/repeat, kept going until sunrise.  nuts .  use to get that when we lived down in CA in Long Beach.  never seen that here.  crazy

O the snow, the beautiful snow!
Filling the sky and the earth below!
Over the house-tops, over the street,
Over the heads of the people you meet,
Dancing, Flirting, Skimming along.
Beautiful snow! it can do nothing wrong.

To me, January always feels darker. It’s subjective. No Christmas lights. No holiday in sight.

On an objective note, I wonder if this captures the Earth’s curvature around New England. Hard to believe but it’s true that St John’s Newfoundland and Seattle are at the same latitude.

Hard to believe it’s been SIX years since models were about to turn VERY cold and folks in China were getting a weird cold.

After some brief moderation, AK, Yukon and northern BC are going back in the freezer. Unreal pattern persistence this winter.

Nope, that map is accurate. The beautiful Laurentides and Lac Saint Jean are further south than you.

And bye teams are about to be 0-6 in the new CFP format.   Will Indiana be able to break the streak?

January is always the month I would get the “winter blues”. No more Christmas spirit or holiday events to go to, the days are still dominated by darkness, still a long way to go until longer, warmer and brighter days, and overall not much going on in the month. February is when things start changing, the days are noticeably longer, baseball and spring is on the horizon, and you can even eke out a 60° sunny day with the right setup for some spring fever.

Hopefully this year we have some good model riding and some snow to help fill the January void. These chilly and foggy nights/mornings the last few days have felt nice and wintery.

Did you know we have an offtopic thread where you can get all giddy about NIL rules, the CFP format you love, the destruction of small school sports which you openly cheer for, and your hatred for spicy food and public art. If you keep vandalizing the weather thread with your distasteful takes, I will be forced to ban you from the forum and post a billboard in North Bend reminding the town folk you are banned.

December finished with an average temp there of -22.8. That's good for coldest since 1980 and second coldest since 1964.

They actually torched the first few days of the month. If the current pattern, which looks to persist for awhile longer, had set in a few days earlier it probably would have been their coldest December on record.

Meanwhile, it's been a brutal fall/early winter here in CO. Denver just had our second driest OND on record, after 2021. And that's including all city records going back to 1872.

In addition, it was the warmest December on record for the airport, and third warmest for all Denver stations going back to 1872. I feel lucky to have gotten 7" of snow last month!

Seattle area is the same latitude as Prince Edward and Newfoundland and our winter climate still sucks.

Bold call for no snow at PDX but I guess there’s typically slightly higher odds for snowless winters down in Oregon than Washington and BC overall.
