Nice December pull for Juneau in an era defined by a rapidly warming arctic. Four new daily record lows, including the pair of -10F's on the 22nd and 23rd. -10F is the coldest December reading since 1995, tying 1995 and 1955 for 5th coldest overall. You have to go back to 1968 to find a December reading below -10F. -10F is also the coldest reading at Juneau in general since 1995, and you have to go back to 1974 to find colder. Min/max of 7F on the 22nd is a daily record and the coldest December min/max since 1995. 15 highs below 20F, a new record for December. 15 lows below 10F, third most on record.

New all time snowiest December by a crazy 27.3"! 2nd snowiest month ever. New all time largest snow depth by 9". Five days with more than 9" of snow; more than twice the previous December record, tying the *DJF* record, and coming in 2nd place *annually* (technically tying for 1st annually if you shift the lens to Oct-Sep water years.)

Interestingly January 2024 also broke some new ground in the snow dept. 36" max snow depth was the highest for any month in decades, and 4 snows above 9" was double the previous monthly record. It could have been more memorable, but December 2025 just eclipsed that month in every metric imaginable.

Yep. Like I said, their 21st century Jan 1950 but in December.

it's now once more the month that is supposed to be the "heart of winter" lets see if it doesn't deliver routine disappointment again this year.

I chose 2016 as a 10 year mark and asked Chap GPT "How mant times has it snowed I n Bainbridge Island sine 2016?  Here's the sketchy and sad answer...

While a precise total number of times (individual days or distinct events with any snow) requires access to a complete daily historical log which is not available in the provided snippets, available data from select sources indicates that snow events in January for Bainbridge Island are infrequent but do occur in some years
  • January 2024: The area experienced a "wintry mix" event from January 16-17, and "light snow" on January 11.
  • January 2020: A winter storm on January 12-13 dumped up to 8 inches of snow in areas around the Puget Sound region (including Bellevue and Everett), suggesting snow in Bainbridge Island was likely during this period.
  • Other years: The major "Snowmageddon" event mentioned in the sources was in February 2019, not January. Data for January in the years 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2025 (as of the date of the search results) does not explicitly mention major snowfall in the snippets, though localized snow events may have occurred.

There is a couple of runs of the GFS that shows this around the same time. This is the 18Z run from today. The 00Z Euro AIFS shows it too.

Maybe they are picking something up. I was watching Michael Snyder tonight and he said the GFS picked up a Arctic outbreak 16 days before it actually happened. I don't remember the year he talked about but maybe they are doing the same thing this time 🤔

The one thing I noticed is what's coming around the high pressure. If the run went out further, I believe that low would reinforce the cold air with the possibility of snow.

On the 18z GFS you can see one around Alaska but there is one just North of Washington in Vancouver BC about to come down South into the PNW.

It's just something I noticed 🤗❄️

That Euro run was special. Full on mountain wave event. Snow with the Arctic front early in the morning 1/16, then temps drop throughout the day into the low 20s by the afternoon.

Or maybe Oswego NY... at least there you have warm summers as well.  I have been watching a storm chaser in the lake effect snow band there this morning and checked out the forecast... casually insane snow amounts!
