June 2026 Observations and Discussion.

Good morning. The overnight low and current temperature is 78 the current DP here in my yard is 74. It looks like it has gotten down to at least 77 officially for Grand Rapids the record warmest low for today is 78 so that will not be tied officially. Todays through Thursday the forecast is for highs in the mid 90’s and lows mostly in the mid 70’s.  Friday will be a little cooler with highs in the low 90’s The weekend will still be very warm with highs in the upper 80’s and lows in the mid and upper 60’s there is a chance of showers over the weekend.

The official H/L at Grand Rapids yesterday was 92/68 there were 15 Cooling Degree Days. There was 0.10” of rainfall the highest wind gust was 25 MPH out of the S. Weather events were thunder, rain, light rain and fog.  For today the average H/L is 83/62 the record high of 99 was in 1931 the coolest high of 61 was in 1902 the record low of 40 was in 1943 the warmest low of 78 was in 2018. The most rainfall of 1.69” was in 1938, last year the H/L was 86/70 and there was 0.13” of rainfall.

Some weather history for June 30^th 1972, The entire state of Pennsylvania was declared a disaster area as a result of the catastrophic flooding caused by Hurricane Agnes, which claimed 48 lives, and caused 2.1 billion dollars damage. (The Weather Channel), 1988,  Thunderstorms in eastern Kansas drenched Worden with 12.21 inches of rain, and a wall of water two to four feet deep swept through Lone Star, KS, flooding every home in the town. Up to ten inches of rain was reported southeast of Callaway, NE. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 75 mph at Winfield, KS. Seventeen cities in the north central and northeastern U.S. reported record low temperatures for the date, including Duluth, MN, with a reading of 36 degrees. Today should be our last sub 90 degree high until Monday. Mid to upper 80's today rising into the low to mid 90's tomorrow and then upper 90's in higher spots to near 100 in our valley locations both Thursday and Friday. Shower chances increase later July 4th with the days trending slightly cooler with highs by Monday in the upper 80's.

I am loving these cooler mornings (72F) and low DP's as I can really enjoy working on my laptop out on my patio deck.  What a wonderful way to finish off June!

A few more tornadoes were confirmed in IN from Fri-Sat, so just padding the new record at this point, which is up to 76.

A year to remember for IL and IN.  Despite bordering each other, it is not always the case that both states are so active in the same year.  In 2006 for example, IL had 123 tornadoes and IN only had 25.  And in 2003, IL had 120 and IN again only had 25.

For anybody into pointless stats -- ORD is going to do something this month that hasn't been done in a while, and that is to finish a month at an exact number of inches of precip.  In this case, June 2026 will end right at 5.00"

The last time there was a month with x.00" of precip was March 2013, which had 2.00".  Basic math says that this kind of thing has a 1/100 chance of happening, but it has been 159 months since it happened.

IN had 57 tornadoes in June, breaking the previous record for a month of 44.  What's really crazy is that all of them occurred between 6/11 and 6/27, so that number was achieved in about a two and a half week timeframe.

June finished -0.1 at ORD. Cooler than the last couple of Junes, but still a very average, unremarkable month overall.  Quite weak considering the impending super Nino. June 2015, by comparison, finished at -3.2 despite being 2015-16 being my top analog for the upcoming winter.

This June was actually almost dead on with June 2023 at ORD.  That month was +0.2.  I mention that one since it was a strong/borderline super Nino, though this one looks like it wants to blow that one out of the water.
