Pretty much just give us an SSW in early November, early December, and early January and we should be fine then. Hopefully. Maybe. No one knows.

On Jan 26, 2024 DC hit 80 degrees, after it had never done that in all of Dec-Feb! That's +35 days! Coldest day of the year is Jan 27.

Winthrop is basically to cold what Redding is to heat. It’s like every possible geographical factor comes together to make that place as cold as possible in the winter. Kelowna is 100 miles farther north and only a couple hundred feet lower, yet its winters are like 5°F warmer on average.

12/1/21 was so bizarre. Nothing close to it had ever happened before, and then this weird cracky setup just popped up and destroyed the all time monthly record high by 16°F. Winthrop has never observed a warmer temp than 12/1/21 between Halloween and mid-March.

The US and Canadian Rockies are perfection. The problem with the PNW is that the tree density and height is too high. Fewer, shorter trees really highlight the environment... With the nice rocky peaks.

Still beautiful up here nevertheless, but you have to sort of hunt out the good views... Whereas the Rockies can be stunning in more area.

haha, that's how I feel too.  But it does feel like complaining about the dense forests of the PNW is sort of like complaining about the sound of crashing waves in Bali.

But it's true that the PNW has some of the best mountains in the world.  Much bigger than what we've got here.  I flew between Bozeman and Seatac in May and it's pretty obvious from 30k feet that Washington has better mountains.  But there are all these trees and foothills and in the way.  The Tetons rise from a perfectly flat, mostly treeless valley floor... epic.

Looks like PDX is locked in to put up a five spot when it comes to sub-70 maxes. Have to go back to when Milli Vanilli was topping the charts and America was gearing up for an absolutely awful pilot called The Seinfeld Chronicles on NBC in order to find an equal this deep into the TORCH season.

Not complaining! The trees are good fuel.

But the scenery can be diminished by it sometimes. The lowlands are ugly.

This is in the North Cascades.

I can assure you there is nothing comparable in the lower 48 in terms of ruggedness and glaciated terrain.

No “big trees” crowding the views.. I do get tired sometimes though being crowded by trees below 3K

Perfect warm period. Nice to not always default to 90F in between troughs. 65F -> 85F -> 65F and so on is summer perfection. Ideally with some midlevel lightning and PSCZ drizzle thrown in.

64/52 spread at KSEA today, identical to yesterday. Good for a -6.7F mean departure on the day.

@Phil could only imagine weather like this during July... At least he gets thunderstorms on the regular!

That's why I did mention it's still beautiful but you have to go out of your way. Versus when I visited the Rockies you get great views even down to the valley floors.
