As someone who has lived in and explored both places quite a bit, there are differently beautiful sides to both.

The greenness and lush forests surrounding the Cascades definitely add a colorful vibrancy lacking for much of the Rockies. And the sheer size of volcanic peaks rising from near sea level to 10k+ is undoubtedly more visually impressive from distance.

That said, you are correct that epic vistas are much easier to come by in the Rockies. The size of the range is also so much broader in many areas, creating many a valley view with peaks surrounding you.

Weekend is really looking nice.   ECMWF show much less in the way of low clouds and full afternoon sun both days with highs in the mid 70s and light wind.   Ideal and good timing.

And it was the swampiest 101°F I’ve recorded since the Obama administration. Highest heat index IMBY since August 2016.

Most of DC was over 100°F. DCA right on the water was 98°F.

IAD and BWI both maxed out at 97.

The furnace looks to get going after the 10th. We'll see if it gets held back, or brought forward. Some of these runs are getting quite intense

No mega fires up here sucking up all the resources yet, maybe. Been able to knock them out before the next ones have hit. One problem with the summer troughs that swing through - that we all get happy about on the west side - often means fire weather for the eastside. Thankfully, it looks like winds are pretty subdued over the next 7-10 days, with the troughs sort of dancing around us rather than head on or offshore.

The ensembles are more interested in this death ridge in the clown range than the preliminary trough being advertised by many control runs. Interesting to see.

But the center of this ridge could be a bit inland. Though it has trended stronger and west in the 06z GEFS and EPS AI.

They put in a sweet pan camera this spring atop McClure in the Methow that allows for a great view of the entire mid valley. Looks like the main view isn't updating at the moment but worth a bookmark.

Absolutely perfect evening to watch the US game. 70 at the start and fell into the mid 60s by the end. It wasn’t too hot sitting in the sun.
 

Also cool to watch the enthusiasm grow. There were probably 100 people or so at the first game and probably 5-600 at this one. They added an extra screen, but pretty much reached max capacity.

Why does Death Valley National Park bother putting these signs up? The wet bulb globe temps in Death Valley are basically just an average summer day in DC and they don’t put up signs like this at the National Mall.

As for following normal guidelines, this Niño is in uncharted territory, so by definition there are no analogs on which to base any expectations. The resultant weather patterns may be like an ordinary Niño, only more so. Or they may be completely different. Who can say at this point?

I have a picture of myself and my brothers next to one of those very signs 21 years ago, in August! 

Sadly, it was only like 110 when we were there.

Sadly, it was only like 110 when we were there.

This is going to sound like a cheap one-up, but in August of 2017 I was there with my mom on a day it hit 122F. A few things happened:

-Our car, a 2009 Outback, almost shat the bed on the way out

-My mom nearly got heat stroke after walking for five minutes

-My water bottle, which I grabbed ice cold out of the cooler, was hot to the touch well before we even turned back to our car

That heat is no joke

Sunny here this morning... first sunny morning in a week.  Looks like summer starts up again tomorrow afternoon.  The weekend looks awesome although I am sure you will hang onto clouds and chilly temps longer than down here.   We plan to be on the boat on the 4th... looks like full sun and almost no wind and a temp in the mid 70s on the lake per the ECMWF which is good enough!
