Look like the hi-res smoke models have took a turn for the worst for western WA starting tomorrow PM. Fully expect to be complete Shiet by Tuesday and the rest of the week.

The skies cleared out today and we took advantage of the opportunity. We drove four hours from our campsite up to Hat Point in Oregon. The trek up to the peak begins in this tiny little hamlet called Imnaha; the road itself is well paved dirt, climbing nearly a mile all the way up to 7000' within 24 miles, with a hefty drop off the side. Pretty gnarly. Thankfully for us, we were the only human beings on the entire mountain, so we got to enjoy the mildly smoky vistas off the basalt peninsula all to ourselves, without careening into Hell's canyon trying to avoid a speedy pickup truck. The peak itself was really cool. A well made interperative site with benches and campgrounds and informational plackards, sweeping views of the Snake River and Devil's Range accross the Idaho border, and a paved footpath all the way up to the base of the fire tower at the top. The fact that there was no one else (not even a ranger) for the entire hour we were up there made it really eerie.

Back at the bottom in Imnaha we drank iced cream soda from the town tavern.

There was a lot more that I didn't include here or even take photos of, including the fairytale-like Little Sheep Creek which followed the highway down to Imnaha from Joseph, or the homemade salsa we bought out of a little shopkeep on Tucker Down Rd. Safe to say we really made the most of it today... And there's so so much more I want to explore down here that we didn't get to seeing today due to the smoke. Next year in late spring I'm coming back down during peak bloom, well before the smoke season (and during peak season as well). I want to see more of the Wallowa range and the Zumwalt Prairie, and I want to try camping up on Hat Point. Incredible area. I've fallen in love

Unfortunately Spokane is not in the clear yet. The Autumn Lane Fire is doing pretty bad tonight, and evacuations are being ordered. Different part of Spokane compared to the Old Trails Fire which made headlines earlier.

I guess we will see how this changes in the coming day. August is welcoming us with smoke and terrible fires for so many. :(

Looks like about 3 hot/smoky days, but as has been the theme this summer, it doesn't last long and is followed by a big cooldown. Will be interesting to see how the smoke affects temps this week.

Was cool in the lowlands: about 50F. Did my 5x bike up a hill this am and there was a gentle outflow a few hundred ft higher and it was noticeably warmer.

Why do you think? It's a pretty basic onshore pattern, not convective like what started a lot of the fires last month and not a big wind maker like this past weekend.

It's here. Hazy morning with a nice orange glowy sun. Going to get progressively worse throughout the day. Also a bit breezy out, adding fuel for more potential fires.

Dry and windy. Much like Saturday. Likely won't make a lot of new fires, just stoke and spread existing ones.

Looks like a pretty standard warm onshore flow pattern with breezy afternoons in the lee side areas, windy in The Dalles, Ellensburg, etc. Not ideal if you have existing fires but pretty typical midsummer weather.

Unfortunately we have a lot of existing fires. Any typical breezy/dry pattern is not going to be good. We need a soaker.

A little bit of orange glow already starting from the smoke drifting this way this morning. The high temperatures might be quite a bit lower for the heatwave if it gets bad enough.

Air is still good here at the surface even though the sky is milky. Can’t say the same for Orondo. Glad I was over there a few weeks ago when it was perfect.
