West Antarctica Valley Deeper Than Grand Canyon Found Under 4 Miles (7 km) of Ice.

Recommended Posts

There's so much to learn about the Antarctic

"Ice-penetrating radar of huge valley under some 4 miles (7 km) deep Antarctic ice

discovered by scientists from U. K.'s Newcastle University, the University of Bristol's

Glaciology Centre, the British Antarctic Survey and the universities of Edinburgh, Exeter

and York. After three seasons of mapping and investigating this West Antarctica region,

satellite and ice-penetrating radars have confirmed the valley hidden under all the ice is

up to 1.86 miles (3 km) deep and more than 186 miles (300 km) long and up to

15.5 miles (25 km) across. The deep valley floor beneath all the ice is 1.24 miles

(2,000 meters) below sea level. "
