Air pretty smoky on Steens Mountain, and it looks like I’m about a week late for peak aspen color.

Definitely seem to be taking the 2010/1988 route this year. Both 1st year La Niñas w/ +QBO @ 50mb following El Niños. 1988 was also preceded by a multiyear +ENSO/Niño, like this year.

Both featured big league western cold in February. Difference is 2010 had potent early season -NAO/-PNA while 1988 was more zonal until late January/early February.

Many other -ENSO/+QBO years were chilly out there during the 2nd half of winter, as well. At the very least, it’s hard to bet against a cold February west of the Rockies this year.

Would continue the trend in recent decades of February being the month that delivers the wintertime goodies.

It's called clown range for a reason.

February was easily our lamest month from 1996-2011. It's made a bit of a comeback since then, though (2011, 2014, 2018, 2019)

12z GFS looks decent. Hopefully the next two days are our warmest for the next six months or more.

Very possible we end up with above average precip this month. Would be nice. We shall see.

Feb 2011, 2012, 2017 and 2019 were the only ones here considered "snowy". The others were below average at my place.

For some reason also it seems like there's less of a window for big snowstorms in February compared to Dec-Jan. Especially less occurrences in November.

A lot of other places too I imagine. January was good, but I'm pretty sure Feb was the reason why we still had a deficit last winter.

Crazy how dry it was especially south of here. I thought the RRR was making a return. Just constant offshore blocking.

Was also a very sunny February.

Even rainfall lacked as well. There was what, an hour or two it rained one night and zilch the other 695 hours of February. lol

12Z EPS on the warm train... quite a shift.   Not very consistent.

Here is the 8-15 day period.   I think Jesse warned Jim about this.
