October 2020 Weather Observations for the PNW

Handles the weekend shortwave a little differently than previous runs (less clipperesque, more digging) but we still end up in a pretty chilly pattern by early next week.

Very troughy long range. Would be a welcome change of pace, and probably a start to the seasonal color changes here.

Getting at very least a little gusty now, but I doubt anything more than 25 mph. Sky is clearing up though!

I have never understood why people root for high winds. I had a very strong wind event on Labor Day. Now me and most of my neighbors are traumatized for life.

I live in one of the least windy places in the lower 48 and high winds are a novelty here.

I’m not going to root for dry fire-causing east winds. But wet westerly winds are not a fire pattern.

I am surprised my power hasn't gone out today. The grid is so terrible up here. Our power goes out for at least 12 hours 5-6 times a winter.

That does sound super annoying, but it is a choice on your part.

That is very true. When I made the decision to buy the house, I may not have realized how much the power would go out, but I did know that i would have to deal with more extreme weather, limited services, and have to commute no matter where I worked. In the end I am happy with my choice. We have had over 300" of snow in those 9 years. To me that makes up for a lot.

There's a lot of this talk that comes from the survivors of hurricanes and tornadoes, when compared to the thousands who actively chase them for sport and often times monetization for their footage. I hope you don't lose your power.

I like snow too. Sounds like a decent trade off. (Since your home survived the fires that is)

I skied in 65-70 MPH gusts at Meadows with blowing snow back during that storm on 1/11. I honestly loved it. Certainly more interesting than high pressure.

They did have to close the lifts after a while though.

I like types of weather that some don’t like but others DO.

Not necessarily. Have you ever been up to the Vista House on a bright, clear sunny raging east wind day? The trees up there are so acclimated to it that there's no damage to be had, but those extreme gusts are (literally) pretty breathtaking to witness. The thrill is more just about experiencing the raw power of nature up close, I don't think anyone roots for destruction.

I was just a young lad that already knew had a fascination with snow, but that day when this big wind hit and seeing the massive power of Mother Nature taking out a large maple tree in our back yard, the roar, the shaking of the windows and house, the power going out, my dad cooking the Thanksgiving Turkey on the BBQ...And it being my Birthday...That was the day I became obsessed with the weather. Absolutely LOVE the power of the wind, that sounds...Gives me goosebumps!!

I don't think we would live here without good infrastructure.

Part of the decision was also it is what we can afford, you live in a great location with the best of both worlds available. And if we are being real, I could not afford to live where you do. Once you get up around 1600' in Western Oregon you just are more often than not going to be in a very rural area with limited infrastructure. Maybe some spots out around Sandy would be similar and have better infrastructure, but I am not sure, and then affordability could be an issue too.

I enjoy the rural lifestyle for the most part, and do not really need to feel like I am in the city. It is probably a little harder on my wife. The internet and cell issues are a challenge without great solutions at this point (Though my company is shelling out quite a bit for a cell booster.), the power issue is a little more in our control since we can purchase a generator. But that is not cheap either and it has taken a couple of years from making that decision to be able to save up the money to purchase one that can run the whole house, shop, and well pump, and be professionally installed.

Quite blustery up this way. SW 16G31

is the latest report from KBLI.

Unfortunately, I am still in a wind shadow at my location, so I am just seeing an occasional rustling of the leaves.  I can see the taller trees in the distance getting blown about quite a lot.  Also seeing a lot of sunbreaks.  It has to be coming from just the right direction to get going here....

Breezy and sunny here with gusts in the 30s. The convergence zone over Arlington and Darrington looks pretty mean at the moment. Probably some 1-2" per hour rates falling if not some hail.
