Today is why I love October.  37 this morning, 61 now.  Not a cloud in the sky, fresh snow in the mountains.  Only thing I could ask is the colors be further along.

Mostly cloudy up here and 56.

Wasn't that like a 6-day rug-pull? There have been worse I'm sure. But last winter was the worst one since I moved to Oregon in 1989. Not a single day in winter had a sub-40 high. Only time that's ever happened.

It wasn’t that bad this far north, but the further south you were, the more it sucked, and it sucked particularly badly for those south of Seattle.

The epic, top-tear, all-time record breaking cold the GFS was forecasting just was not believable. It was inevitable there was going to be some backpedaling from that.

I'm looking forward to that somewhat this winter. All the action the FV3 will be showing will be greatly exaggerated again and we'll all go crazy as if we have an early lead in the ballgame up a couple TDs or so.

Not meteorological winter then. And it still had fewer than 33-34 even with that bush league late Nov "event."

There have been a handful of winters that haven’t had any sub-40 highs at PDX. I think there was a notable stretch in the early 2000s

Not sure about EUG though. I know they have more of a tendency to get fogversions down there, which is probably how they would score sub-40 highs even during most crappy winters.

Yes the air is just a bit more still too so if we have gap wind action then it can be still down here with very light northerly gradients to where more heat radiates out into space as compared to further north.

I too am a mature adult who sees the futility in placing any emotional investment into a extrapolated weather computations who have an inherent degree of error due to our positioning on the continent. This is why I find it of the utmost importance that we not only remind those who will harm themselves with a distant frame of fantasy, but we must deride and punish those who consistently pontificate the benefits of winter’s mirage.

How’s the EPS looking???????

I’ve always assumed it was a ponderosa. I’m not an expert. It’s pretty scraggly and my wife always wants me to cut it down. It’s children are growing up around it and they seem pretty healthy.

I don’t think it’s a pondy. Could be one of the several sub-species of lodgepole. They grow them all over along the freeways in NE Portland and Vancouver too and I’ve never been able to get a clear ID on one.

They do have a tendency to look a little scraggly.

Lodgepole makes sense. I have a couple of those along the road that are clearly lodgepole, but they are a lot smaller and may be a different sub species. Everyone always asks if this one is dying, but it actually seems quite healthy, it has grown a lot since I have lived here.
