Thrilling discussion about palm trees!

Palm trees used to thrive in WA state during warmer periods of our climate history.    The Earth is ever-changing.

I have found bauxite in the hills west of Portland. It’s a mineral that only forms in tropical to warm subtropical conditions. Therefore, its presence indicates that the climate must have been warmer at some point in the past.

I had a full week with lows below 20°, including one in single digits, and a couple days where the high failed to crack 20. High of only 15° on the 14th, with a low that morning of 11° and 9° the following morning. Seemed like the outflow was ripping for a week-and-a-half straight with no let-up. I don't know what qualifies as top-tier cold, but it was plenty chilly on the border.  I do seem to recall that there was a dramatic north-south temperature gradient, though.

I had a 19/13 day last winter.

I think it was Feb 1989 you are thinking about. That was colder than Dec 1990. Feb 1989 killed a lot of non-native stuff. I had just moved to Seattle the following spring and the carnage at the Washington Park Arboretum was quite evident.

There are no palms in my neighborhood. It gets blasted by Fraser outflow too much for them.

I was an idiot 12yr old in February 1989 and my fellow idiot friend and I rode our bikes across a frozen Lake Goodwin when our parents were not watching...The ice never even cracked! However the person that  attempted to drive their Suzuki Samurai onto the ice was not so successful.

Heavy drizzle and 54 currently.

Same, although I would struggle to call this drizzle. It certainly looks like it, but we've picked almost 0.5" in the last hour. Definitely looks like October outside.

Not a fan of drizzle.... To me it's worse than a steady rain. Thoughts?

I had a 36/28 day last winter! We both should be able to beat those numbers this time around. Should get colder lows too...coldest here was 25 degrees on 11/30. Only 4 sub 30 lows last winter.

Our meteorological winter was even worse.

We had a monumental 40/32 on Dec 4

That was the coldest high in met winter. If we don't do better than that from Dec-Feb this next winter then there will never be any top-tier Arctic events here ever again in our lifetimes.

What's really sad is my calendar year low...24.7 degrees.  The previous warmest was 21.7 in 2012.  Every other year has at least been into the 10's or single digits.  Hopefully November/December can make it happen.

Weird.  I recently read we got VERY cold last March.🤔

I think 1999 and 2001 were also pretty similarly pathetic. Both years bottomed out around 21-22 here.

For what it's worth, I had the coldest November low since 2010 last year. And coolest Black Friday low/high in even longer than that. Folks in K-Falls will line up outside of a Walmart in 0 or below weather apparently. 🤪

Looking back at January threads. Had -3 on 01/15/2020, matching a 103 year old record.

That goes to show in the 2nd half of January, December and I think February sees less arctic air than the first half?

Also, impressive week from Jan 9th - 16th nearly 20" snow fell. Unfortunately things died down quite a bit after those mid January storms. 2 weeks later almost no evidence it ever snowed, and I ended up with one of the driest Februaries on record. There was not a single flake the whole month.

After all the pictures I found of that area, didn't think they'd have a section left of Santiam that isn't an apocalyptic wasteland.
