October 2020 Weather Observations for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Rainfall stats down in the valley out here... it has rained every day for the last 2 weeks.  That is actually the longest streak of the year... even longer than any streak during the near record setting rain in January and February.   6.72 inches for the month now (normal is around 5 inches).   NW flow has been dominant for the last week which is very wet in this area.   The drier period coming up is not too surprising in this area.

Be sure to post pictures! I’m thinking of heading up to Anderson Mountain (between Bellingham and Mt. Vernon, elevation 3200) to see some snow. Assuming, of course, that the DNR doesn’t lock the gate.

Do you use the gate off of Alger CCC? Never been back there but have been curious. That'll probably be a good spot to catch some flakes.

Edit: shouldve read a few more posts

Today’s chore is to bring plants In from outside and mulch a few other under leaves to give them protection from the chill.
According to GFS we just have the chill and Friday/ Saturday Storm to track and we will probably get shadowed on that one.  Need me another round of active stormy weather to look forward to now that I’m home.

Yeah.  These are my thoughts too.  Then some more winter prep on the yard.

I need to bring the lemon in or to the west side of the house and string lights and frost cloth around it. I do have some cacti to bring in

Heard a roll of thunder earlier, added .03" to the gauge, 6.01" for the month, 50.78" for the year.  Currently 46 after a low of 43.  Thinkin of shutting down the garden watering line from the well for the winter today but I am a bit hesitant for fear of jinxing the entire winter.

Wouldn't want to experience any prolonged troughing for literally the first time all year!

I don't mind troughing... that is not always wet if its deep enough.    Flat ridging with NW flow is usually the wettest pattern here during the rainy season.

I am just looking forward to the drier period coming up.   Regardless of how it happens.    Its rained for 2 weeks straight here and even in my wet location that usually means drier weather is ahead.   This is now the longest rain streak here since April of 2019 when it rained for 16 days in a row.

No way it's been that cold before the 25th.  1949 bottomed out around -4.5 from what I can tell.  That's kind of the gold standard for pre October 25.  After the 25th is a way different ballgame.

I will say that it's possible the 850s have dropped to around -6 in maritime polar situation before the 25th before.  1956 and 1985 are a couple that come to mind for that.

Ever? You sure about that, mate?

Its been very wet over the last month up here.    Deep troughing would be much drier in my area and also wetter for the rest of the western US.     But that does not seem to be what will happen.
