October 2020 Weather Observations for the PNW

Recommended Posts

I think one place people are going wrong is comparing this to a winter Arctic outbreak situation.  When considering how early this is it's quite an impressive situation.  Many places had double digit minus temperature departures today and the real cold air is just now moving south through BC.  We'll see how the numbers look when it's all said and done.

Another thing that makes this impressive is how fast the temps have crashed when compared to the entire autumn so far.  I'm pleased with what I've seen so far.

For what?  A bit of frost between now and Monday?  That's not any where near exciting.  I saw that 2 nights ago already.

Just no appreciation for an extremely rare pattern this early.  Too bad.  You wouldn't have been impressed with 1949 either.

Made it up to 63F after a low of 30F. Currently 55F and cloudy. Feels like a pleasant summer evening.

I would be going out of my mind with your endless torching down there.  I must say 55 this early in the night would not be a normal summer night though.  I hope for your sake this insane N to S gradient doesn't continue this winter.

There is nothing notable about this pattern for the west side of the mountains,  frost is not that uncommon for us this time of year.

The ECMWF temperature maps show things staying pretty chilly through Tuesday morning and then warming to about normal Tuesday afternoon.  Even places south of Portland are shown to be quite a bit chillier during the day Sunday and Monday.

It appears Sunday night will be the coldest for many locations due to some breezy areas Saturday night.  The ECMWF cloud cover feature looks much more promising for mostly clear skies for the Puget Sound area for much of Sunday night.  That should be a solid freeze that night.

It’s been torching just about everywhere in the region this fall. Up until the last few days when it has started to turn colder throughout the region. You are way overstating the N/S difference just to make yourself feel better about how warm it’s been, while he is to make himself feel worse about the current cool down.

I swear it’s like an irrationality contest here sometimes.

One place in Southern BC is down to -2 now and that is not from radiational cooling.  I don't know how that isn't impressive.  Even here I'm down to 42 now with solid cloud cover and north winds.  Pure CAA cooling.  I would have had a few inches of snow tonight had it been winter.

I'm just commenting on his endless streak of 60 degree days.  We have had a lot of 50s here and today it was only 47.  At least the diff between here and Eugene has been pretty enormous judging by what he's been talking about.
