October 2020 Weather Observations for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Well like others have said...Where the heck did this moisture come from? I was up at 3am and it was 29 and clear. Get up again and see a wet deck to my shock at 5:30am with a temp of 34. Currently 33 and cloudy. And I spotted frozen precip on my roof.
.01” on the day.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Eugene hit 23 on one of their 5 min obs. That would be a record.

Looks like Salem only hit 27 and missed theirs by 1, but we will see at 11 what their official low was. 26 is the number they needed.

It has been mentioned, but the 29 at PDX beats their old daily record low of 30, set in 1963.

Also their earliest 20s in goodness knows how long.

71 years (1949) to be exact!

Kind of disappointed the clouds didn’t roll in a few hours later so we could have fully maximized cooling. 35 is still pretty cold but we could have probably hit upper 20s to around 30 with clear skies this morning.

Either way it was interesting to see the precipitation move in this morning we were pretty close to having a few flakes this morning. Up to 39 now...this is our 4th low in the 30s this month.

Good thing I didn’t look at the radar at 3am while I was checking the temperature.  I would of been wide awake tracking that pretty blue color!

It was about 20 minutes of little tiny ice pellets coming down. Was interesting but still messed up what could have been a record setting night here but oh well...lots of other people set records last night so this is still a pretty noteable event.

Looks like the gfs is starting to lock in friday as a rainy day and Halloween and Sunday look dry. Would be very happy with this solution for going up to orcas this weekend. Euro seems to agree too.

12Z GFS looking pretty dry and mild so far... not surprising considering what the 00Z EPS showed.

5-10 day mean... 10-15 day mean... 15-day precip anomaly:

This is good because the south valley has gone a while since our last dry stretch.

Wonder if anyone else here saw this last night...was getting some sunset photos and saw this streak across the sky to the north of here. I wasn’t 100% sure what it was until I looked at this...ive never seen a meteor come flying through before.

Still not really seeing any sort of major signs of zonal flow setting up even though you would think that would be the next logical pattern. Flow looks pretty meridional until maybe day 10+.

Some really amazing records set from this pattern:

Olympia set a record cold for yesterday at 26 beating out 29 from 1978.

Montana set the all time earliest/coldest reading ever in the lower 48 at -29 at Potomac!!

Spokane set the record for snowiest October day and month all in one day.
