Here's the snow thus far

By far the most impressive October storm I've witnessed here since 2012 when I bought property. Ended up with 9 inches of powder and is currently 22 degrees down from 24 at 9am.

The EPS mean has trended toward considerably more negative PNA over the past two runs.  We'll see if that trend continues tonight.  FWIW the EPS control has had two very cold runs in a row for us, and the 18z looked like it was on a similar path through day 6 which is as far out as that run goes.  At any rate this weekends trough looks pretty impressive.

Your chances are very good of getting quite cold.  Out here remains to be seen.  I think we will get enough seepage to get our first chilly nights at the very least though.

Definite success on the 0z!  That is a solidly cold air mass for so early in the season.  If we do end up with a significant cold snap it's historically an excellent sign having cold weather in October during a La Nina season.

It appears the change that has made the models trend so favorably is the shortwave that develops over Alaska as the block is evolving.  That feature digs down through Western Canada and gives us a good outcome.

In actuality a sharp October cold wave during a Nina is about as good as it gets for a precursor.  Cold in October during a Nino is a far different matter.

Rather impressively the 0z GFS looks identical to yesterday's 0z and today's 12Z EPS control.  Pretty unusual to see that at that time range.

I am interested to see what Jim says about a Nina.  

October cold snaps during a Nino are often disastrous.  1905, 1991, and 2002 are a few notable examples.  October cold waves with a Nina are pure gold.

Yup.  That cold snap is where SEA set it's all time record low for October and it was mid month.  Another one that fits the bill was October 1886 and that was a fantastic winter also.

True, but mid Dec through early Feb was EPIC.  No doubt I would take 1861-62 over 1949-50 in spite of the snow not being quite as epic in this area.  The duration on that one was insane.

I really hope this cold snap happens.  It's actually remarkably rare during a Nina October.  Prior to 1949 the only others I know of right off hand are 1886 and 1916.  Both good winters.

On the GFS ensemble there are a dozen members that show 850s of +1 or lower on October 19.  Nice improvement.

Or do we want to let an authoritarian regime go fill that space, which we know how that's going to look?" A simple yet incredibly hard to refute response. The other interesting point that is pretty obvious is that China will throw as much as it can into catching up to TSMC, whether it is by ingenuity or theft, and as soon as they are, Taiwan is theirs. Will the U.S. go to war over that? Dunno. There's no going back to fix our mistakes, and competition is really heating up around the world. The next few decades are going to be very interesting.

      April 2024 Weather in the PNW

      Ensembles look a little better for rainfall chances later this week than the operational. Although the trend lately has been for everything to warm up and dry out as it approaches so it wouldn’t surprise me to see this meet the same fate.
