Here's the snow thus far

By far the most impressive October storm I've witnessed here since 2012 when I bought property. Ended up with 9 inches of powder and is currently 22 degrees down from 24 at 9am.

Just catching up to everything this morning. I think given that the user base of the forum has been somewhat of a close knit community for 15+ years, there is a bit of leeway given when it comes to be

I would be going out of my mind with your endless torching down there.  I must say 55 this early in the night would not be a normal summer night though.  I hope for your sake this insane N to S gradient doesn't continue this winter.

It’s been torching just about everywhere in the region this fall. Up until the last few days when it has started to turn colder throughout the region. You are way overstating the N/S difference just to make yourself feel better about how warm it’s been, while he is to make himself feel worse about the current cool down.

I swear it’s like an irrationality contest here sometimes.

Some interesting temp profiles in the metro area this evening. PDX is down to 48 with a light west wind while Troutdale is 58 with a stronger SW wind.

Calm and holding at 50 here.

Just no appreciation for an extremely rare pattern this early.  Too bad.  You wouldn't have been impressed with 1949 either.

This pattern isn’t all that rare, I don’t think?

One place in Southern BC is down to -2 now and that is not from radiational cooling.  I don't know how that isn't impressive.  Even here I'm down to 42 now with solid cloud cover and north winds.  Pure CAA cooling.  I would have had a few inches of snow tonight had it been winter.

I'm just commenting on his endless streak of 60 degree days.  We have had a lot of 50s here and today it was only 47.  At least the diff between here and Eugene has been pretty enormous judging by what he's been talking about.

I believe average highs are in the 60s down here still. And Tiger is always going to play up his warmth as much as possible. I’m betting the Eugene area was colder than either of our places the last two mornings. They just had back to back freezes.

I wanted to comment on the post I saw about us not wanting a 1988-89 type winter in the current era.  What does that even mean?  In actuality 1988 and 1942 have a lot going for them as analogs and both had similar top tier cold outbreaks.  One difference is the October cold snap this year is more impressive than either of those years.  Other than that there a lot of similar context.

I gotta go with Jesse in this debate. The warmth has been regional. Not north/south.  Everyone has been significantly above normal. Eugene does have a greater positive departure than Seattle, but they are running pretty close to PDX, and Salem has run slightly closer to average than any of them.

I already illustrated earlier today how this system coming in is following the same script as the last couple years. Wet Washington with lots of snow for their cascades while Oregon is left high and dry. Hope it changes later in the season and think it can.

This is worth noting.

The Dalles has ENE 40mph

Hood River meanwhile WNW 29mph. I've never seen this before with gusty winds seeming colliding with each other over such a short distance 23 miles and such a sharp, defined wind shift like this. That's fancy stuff. Pure weather geek porn.

2 AM Decent pressure rises as The Dalles now as the PDX-DLS gradient is about to switch easterly. C'MON!!!! The fact I'm tracking east winds and CAA pre-Halloween is awesome and makes me anxious cannot wait for the Winter ahead!

You're right to be excited.  I'm pretty thrilled by this pattern and what we have had the past few days also.  Pretty interesting to note the EPS now shows the PNA remaining low through the remainder of the month.  -2 or below much of the time.  Impressively there are now many places in the north interior of WA that are in the mid 30s due to entirely to CAA.  I've never seen this so early in the season.  I can't comprehend how some people are so unimpressed by it.

Most definitely. I may stay up working on music until the east wind develops. I've also talked to Old Man Winter about just going ahead and backing the ridge offshore merging with the Aleutian ridge. He was grumpy, so not sure how well he received my request.
