From a west coaster's perspective, it just seems so dang odd to see so much snow pile up without mountains being a factor. Well, pretty much all weather east of the rockies is incredibly foreign for those from the PNW. I've experienced plenty of it on my occasional visits, but it is just a different world in terms of weather.

I love continental climates. The few times I went to Texas I got to experience it a bit. So much more interesting IMO.

I agree with that, but only for short term weather. Perhaps visits. 100+ temps with dew points in the 70's gets tiresome after about 15 minutes. In a hundred years I wouldn't want to live there permanently. Same with Indiana. Superblech.

Likewise, your weather seemed foreign to me when I‘d visit over the summer.

It actually cools down there at night. And the air smelled like October does here..except it was July. 😍

How well does AC keep up in those conditions?

Pretty frustrating pattern being depicted by the models tonight.  We never get really high and dry so a good inversion is going to be hard to pull off.  The good news is La Nina Novembers have a rich history of providing disappointing patterns.  This month has been decent up until now at least.

Very dense fog already. 38 degrees. I'm not a fan of inversions. They are interesting for a couple of hours then get downright depressing.

I like them when they get into a freezing fog regime.

Not well unless you spend your entire life savings on it.

Every now and then condensation will drip from our attic unit thru the ceiling over the hallway. Temp can reach 160°F up there.

Not that big of a deal.  It's just something I want to see at some point.  Even 1949-50 didn't have a 100 for a lot of places.  For it to happen you have to have some fake cold mixed in there.  Having a hard time coming up with that so far.

Looks like the strong N to S precip gradient continues.  Amazing how that general theme doesn't want to break even with the major ENSO shift.

I think there may be an opportunity around the 5-10th of December.

I'm betting on the ridge being a bit too close early in December.  Maybe mid to late month for the sweet spot.

00z CMCE (Canadian ensembles) Day 10-16.
Ridge, strong inversion, big Columbia Basin cold pool, then some retrogression. Nothing super exciting, but retrogression nonetheless.
floop-cmce-2020112100.500h_anom_na.gif

All I want right now is a strong ridge with the axis not to the east of us.  It does look like it could happen in the 10 to 15 day period.

TWL, you should consider moving to La Pine instead of Indiana. They can have a couple of feet of snow on the ground rather easily and even see severe thunderstorms in the summer. Unlike Bend, it is still relatively affordable there.

I'd love to live in Bend or LaPine!!

I could easily live in Gary, IN.

Lake effect snow squalls all winter on the east side and a legit severe weather season from April-July. IIRC they avg ~ 1 derecho per year and at least a half dozen QLCS’s.

Unfortunately I’m stuck in this swamp box for the foreseeable future.

Maybe Jim should too. They get 200+ frosts a year on average and it can freeze any day of the year, even in July and August.

Just looked at stations in southern Deschutes and northern Klamath and found out that Chemult, OR got an incredible 308 frosts in 1949.

Me too. If I ever get wealthy, my dream spot would be to own a place on Crescent Lake, which isn't far from there. One of the very few locations in Oregon where nice lakefront properties exist and have super excellent summer and winter recreation activities. It does get more snow there than most sane people would ever want though.

In the future though, look for MANY more remote locations to be super livable due to the upcoming decent world wide internet thanks to Starlink, but that's a topic outside of the scope of this subforum.

La Pine is nice. I helped an older lady my wife is friends with move down there a couple years ago. She got a nice place with a couple acres for about 190k. Home may have been manufactured, but it was in good shape.

Living in Bend proper would be like a death sentence. Probably worse.

That was one of the first things I noticed after coming up from Texas. So nice getting to feel 'fall' after the sun goes down all summer long, so crisp.
