November 2020 Weather Observations for the PNW

Call me crazy, but I am seeing subtle signs of retrogression mainly on the ensembles. Nothing exciting, but the ridge axis clearly shifts westward. Also, some operational runs show building heights offshore. We'll have to be patient and trudge through what looks like a probable-likely ridge, inversion, fake cold regime. This won't be until we're moving through the 2nd week of December. C'MON!!!!

Nice. At just Day 13 too!

My first snow up here was on the 3/4th of December 2016. We picked up about 4.5". Then on the 7th we got about 1" in Salem while I was at work. I believe PDX had a little snow and there was some ZR too with that.

FWIW today's 0z CFS showed a massive blast for New Years.  A lot of runs from that model have been excellent for January lately.

That would be OUTSTANDING!

Bringer of snow!

I believe that's the only time the Seahawks have hosted a snow game.

Back in 2013 or 14 we hosted a delayed thunderstorm game in September as well, and not just a passing cold core shower, but solid mid level convection at the tail end of a heat wave with extremely frequent lightning. IIRC there were musings that the NWS thought about giving Seattle proper a warning for a particularly nasty cell, though it ended up weakening slightly before making it into the city.

Weather stats for MBY

Snowfall:

-Total snowfall since joining: 50.25"

-2018-19: 21"

-2019-20: 2.5"

-2020-21: 13"

-2021-22: 8.75"

-2022-23: 5.75"

-2023-24*: 0.25"

-Most recent snowfall: 0.25”; January 17th, 2024

-Largest snowfall (single storm): 8.5"; February 12-13, 2021

-Largest snow depth: 14"; 1:30am February 12th, 2019

Temperatures:

-Warmest: 109F; June 28th, 2021

-Coldest: 13F; December 27th, 2021

-Phreeze Count 2023-24: 31

It makes me think of the end of 03, into 04. Snowed for like a week after Christmas. Ended with an overrunning event and freezing rain. Then winter was pretty much over lol.

Good times though. I had an additional 3 days of winter break.

They also had this one on 12/21/2008. Back bent occlusion of that sweet sucker moved in during the game and I picked up about 2" while it was on. Favre was also the opposing QB!

Seahawks do host the Jets on December 13 this year..... 😲

I don't believe a thing on the models until it's under 1 day. I've been burned way to much.

Haha. Me too. UNLESS it's like December 2008 when somehow they miraculously were in agreement an astonishing 7-8 days out nearly in total lock-step. We've never seen anything like that since. Maybe 4 out, but not 7-8.

I had forgotten about that snow in PDX, it was followed by freezing rain.

I remember going to my dads dark house house after 13hrs of snow removal at my former job. No source of heat without power at our family lake house where I was living at the time so I stayed at my dads since he had a wood burning insert stove. He had a old tiny black and white tv from the 80’s that ran off of several D batteries. We watched the Seahawks snow game on that tiny thing with only lanterns for light. Oh the memories of 2006! More people were using snowmobiles and Quads for transportation around the area than vehicles. Sooo many downed trees from the weight of the snow.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Yeah it wasn’t much, but it reminded me a bit of the early December 1992 event. When it happened I legitimately took it as a great sign for the winter. The event about a week later definitely overshadowed it though.

A lot of east wind on this run. Better than nothing.

Looks like the GEM is having problems running on Pivotal and Tidbits. At least for me....

I only look at the GEM when it shows arctic blasts.
