Our best cold months here in the last 15 years have been December 2008, December 2016, January 2017 and February 2019. February 2019 was pretty legit with an average temp of just 35 degrees...the other months mentioned were in the 37-38 degree average range.

I have lived here since 2011, my only two cold Januaries were 2013 and 2017. Our snowiest January was 2012, but it was a pretty mild month overall.

January 2012 we had 10.5” of snow and slightly less than 1” of freezing rain. Wasn’t a very significant cold snap as we didn’t even get a subfreezing high temp out of it and our coldest low was 27. Did manage 5 days in a row in the mid 30s though. Was a pretty awesome snow event but other than the stretch of cold mid month it was pretty mild month here as well.

I’m pretty sure I can speak for everyone and say we’re all glad you post here. You do post valuable info here...it’s hard to know all the stats for your location unless your recording them and have access to records going back a long time.

Still not an excuse to act like a prick on my part. I feel like owning it is better than just carrying on any stupid points for me.

On another note, I've been having this sensation of my consciousness moving all around my body since I woke up and it's really messing things up for some reason. Taking me forever to type this out...oof.

I don’t really think your acting negatively at all. I wouldn’t worry too much about not having a complete 100% accurate memory of statistics for your location. I have a book where I record all my stats going back the last 15 years so I can remember specific dates with hi/lo temps for the day..rainfall and snowfall numbers too. It’s not super neat but it’s very helpful. Honestly I can only really remember events and stats of the last 15-20 years and know of a few bigger winter events from the 1900s. other than that I only am really familiar with the last 20 years of weather here. Wouldn’t worry too much about not knowing the high low temps and snowfall stats from events 30-50+ years ago.

I apologize if I was coming off like a d*ck earlier. One problem I definitely have is when it feels like people are knowingly or carelessly pushing false information. I feel like it is to the detriment of collective knowledge on here. It's something that bugs me a lot about human nature in general and that's why it frequently manifests itself in my posts. But I need to understand it is often innocent and it's sometimes better to let things slide even if I feel like facts aren't being properly defended. It's better to be a little wrong than a lot mean in many cases.

You're a nice guy and that's better than always being right. I think it could be good for your overall outlook if you did look at the glass half full side of things more frequently. Eugene has had some pretty epic events in the last decade and honestly has been holding its own pretty well compared to just about anywhere else on the west side. We have all gone through a regional downturn of winter events in recent decades.

That said, you are always polite and decent even when you are maybe letting emotion dictate your outlook a little more, and that goes a long ways.

Absolutely. The 2010s were vastly better than the disaster that was 1996-much of the 2000s in terms of cold and snow. That late 90s into the 2000s stretch feels like it skews the records to me, but they're records nonetheless and hopefully was just an aberration. I'm sure there were other lengthy-ish time periods without a whole lot of action down this way in the past.

Very quickly eyeballing it (having a crazy day), it appears the late 70s into the early 80s down here weren't fantastic either.

My point is, nothing lasts forever and if you live up here long enough then one day you will see some cold and snow.

I think everywhere in the lowlands had a bit of a snow drought in the mid-late 70s. The drop off was especially stark relative to what they had seen in the immediate past. Back in the day I remember it being attributed to the PDO flip in the mid seventies. That was back when we thought we were on the verge of another muti-decadal -PDO starting in the late 90s (in conjunction with the 1998-99 La Nina).

I do remember that Dec 1998 event pretty well. And that was when I remember getting down to 12F. Side of the river started to freeze. I had to help move a huge organ with 18F and a wind chill in the negatives...was beautiful.

Our best cold months here in the last 15 years have been December 2008, December 2016, January 2017 and February 2019. February 2019 was pretty legit with an average temp of just 35 degrees...the other months mentioned were in the 37-38 degree average range.

We had an average temp slightly below freezing in January 2017. There were times before that when I thought we would never experience another month with an average temp near or below freezing, but there it was.

At least for the Portland area, I think we will appreciate January 2017 more and more as time goes on.

Then you get to my age and the notebook just kind of disappears as life takes a hold of you!  Mines in a box somewhere from when I lived in Troutdale. Luckily Matt Zaffino who hasn’t aged has a copy of my notes as well :)

He's like Dickk Clark in the late 90s or Regis Philbin in the early 2000s.

That mid to late 90s KATU group was a dream team, so to speak. Bosley, Rob Marciano (national guy now), Zaffino (now KGW chief met), and Rhonda (current co-chief met with Salesky now).

That was a really fluky outcome too, which I find amusing in a geeky sort of way.

That major stratwarm in late January was the difference between a blowtorch canonical niño progression and a monthlong -PNA icebox (since momentum deposition was westerly at the time). Impossible to predict something like that months in advance..when the system reaches a bifurcation point of potential states. Love it.
