1984/85 was the last winter to drop below -10°F here. Wasn’t around yet, but people still remember it because Reagan’s inauguration was moved indoors.

I clearly remember January was an ice box east of the Rockies and then it retrograded to the West.  Another interesting thing I remember is a headline in the Seattle Times in the fall of 1984.  Is a Cold Winter Coming? National Weather Service Computer Guesses Yes.  They actually nailed that one with stone age computers compared to now!

That is a flip of a coin.   50% chance of being right.

Timing to me appears to be moving ahead nicely with the block development and Westerly jet retracting back towards ~180 W/Dateline to ~170 W. On 00z runs tonight I wouldn't expect any new changes until after Day 9 though. I can't wait to see the models by Wednesday 12z(Maybe Tuesday 00z?) runs. C'MON!!!!

Well...maybe 33.3% if you go cold / normal / warm.  Usually +1 to -1 is considered normal.

This is the first year since I've been watching models that I haven't looked beyond day 7 and it's been much more relaxing not looking at the garbage past 168hrs! At first it was hard to do but I'm good with it now.

It's pretty great, isn't it?

Although I do look to day 10.

For me,#1 February 2019 and #2 December 2008. #3 would be December 2013 Only 2” of snow in with that one but it was our longest stretch of sub freezing high temps with 5 in a row, didn’t even get that in 2008 or 2019. #4 would be November 2010...my coldest low in the records at 14 degrees. #5 would be April 2008. We had 3” of snow here which is impressive for April.

What did you see with February 2011? That was about anomalous as it gets for that late in the season.

Weird statement considering winter is two days away from even starting.

Would prefer him to call it wet season or rain season or whatever. To call it “past wettest part of the winter” when it hasn’t even started both meteorologically and calendar is just odd???

Then again, I don’t follow Mass anymore these days. He’s too much for me.

We are past the wettest part of the year statistically... that is all.

Then call it that, which is why I said call it wet season, rain season or wettest part of the year in your case. He called wettest part of the winter, when it hasn’t even started yet.  Which is what makes it an odd statement.

And yes, I am being technical about it because I know a lot people rely on Mass for accurate information. The data he provided was accurate but his statement was not.

that is all

Late Nov/early December is statistically the wettest time of year. But as you can see it doesn't really start dropping off much until almost April.

February 2011 and January 2007 like Jim mentioned could easily be on my top 5 as well. In February 2011 we had 7” of snow while Seattle had nothing. 33/28 on 2/24...30/25 on 2/25 and 32/22 on 2/26! Was pretty epic we lucked out.

February/March 2019 was amazing...had an additional 1.5” of snow in early March. Went up to orcas island on 3/5 and they had 3’ of snow on the top of the mountain still. 2018-2019 was personally my favorite winter I can remember.

Sometimes I look, but I keep in mind my tagline at all times. Makes for a whole lot fewer letdowns.

It's called clown range for a reason.
