I did not realize until a few minutes ago that October 2019 was the 3rd coldest on record at SLE. Two top 10 cold months (February was #7), but no top 10 warm months. I assume January 2020 was a top 10 warm January at SLE.

October 2019 was -3.3 degrees at KLMT. This year may have been a tad warmer because of the warmest start to the month since the 90's here in 2020. I still had some cool lows in the teens later on in October 2020 though.

Stubby 'ol block. Get those reds higher than Alaska and the cold air will flood southward at a better angle, possibly forming a BC Slider.

But, at the very least, there is finally something pretty to look at in the long range again. And as long as there is that, there is hope.

I was playing with reanalysis from the last century, and decided to revisit February 1989. It's crazy to see just how anomalous that event really was..... A 1972mb Frankensteinian PV lobe directly from Russia locked into western Canada with true arctic air funneling into the Region.

The result? The Siberian Express of the century with Seattle notching its first sub-20 high temperature since the infamous January of 1950, this time without the aid of a two foot snowpack, then barely kissing the vingt mark the very next day. To top it off, five inches of powdered sugar to coat the region in a glistening, enchanting white. The stuff of dreams for model weenies and aspiring mets like those on our forum...

It gets me so worked up that I may never see something like this in and around the Seattle area in my lifetime. Our warming climate is making these kinds of events nearly impossible nowadays, growing ever more unlikely each year, no matter how few sunspots manifest, or how many cubic meters of ash from Indonesia are injected into the stratosphere... Though I do sometimes hold out hope that we may squeeze out another event like this, or two, god forbid, before our climate drifts off into obscurity and unrecognition when I am an older man. After all, anomalous events are bound to happen.

I only have faint memories of the December 1990 blast. All other arctic events in my memory were just cold air funneling in slowly. Even when there was a defined arctic boundary it was not very dramatic.

Would be cool to see again. Fortunately I have been able to experience dramatic arctic blasts in other parts of the country. But these big league air masses are hard to come by these days.

It is hard to imagine something like February 1989, December 1990 happening in our present climate.

We have not even had a true regional blast in 7 years.

Good morning. Woke up at 5am and thought the security light had been tripped outside.  Turned out to be the moon.  It was sure bright.  Right now it's 29 and frosty.  Looks like a beautiful morning is ahead.  Hope everybody has an awesome day!

My friend and my 12yr old self rode our bikes across Lake Goodwin during that event (without the parents knowledge of course) it was rock solid!

i was living in Prosser at the time and remember the weather going from shirtsleeve conditions one weekend to the Yakima River being completely frozen from bank to bank the next. For most of a week, highs were in the single digits with blustery winds.

It's called clown range for a reason.

Looking around at Obs. From other locations im surprised to see my location is among the colder ones this morning.

Just looked myself, and was surprised to see how mild it is at Olympia, which is normally one of the colder stations on mornings like this. Also surprised that the WSDOT station in Lynden did not record a freeze last night.

Wow.  Great 6z run and a solid 12z run on the GFS.  Looks like the ensemble is continuing to improve as well.

Meanwhile it dropped to 29 here last night with a very thick frost.
