Well we made it down to freezing again. #7 for the young season.

Briefly beautiful sunrise this morning. Shot from the car. You can even see the inverted shadow of Mt. Hood.

If you like cold there is nothing wrong with the 12z.  In some ways better than any recent run.  The block reset is much cleaner and ends up colder.

A big goal for me is always to have a 100 freeze season.  The coming pattern makes it look that will be on the table at least in the early going.  Places that have already had 5 or more are really off to a good start.

My location probably has the warmest overnight lows of anybody here. Right next the sound we tend to have nights 3-5 degrees warmer on cold mornings. Waters warm nearby and lots of times we have a hard time getting the wind to die down compared to other locations.

The 12z ensemble is onto the idea of the double dip cold snap. Not sure how that wasn't a good GFS run.  Solidly cold.

Well Andrew likely wants lots of storms and zonal flow... so maybe his interests are not always exactly in line with yours.

Big temperature gradients out here... elevated places are really warm.

Same down here. It's 56 here which is 6 degrees warmer than PDX right now. Sandy is all the way up at 60 at 1000ft.

12Z ECMWF shows 3 days with rain up here (Tues - Thurs) and then its basically dry for the next 4 days (Fri - Mon)... good timing.   Too bad we did not have this cycle last May and June when it rained for 7 weekends in a row.

That is a serious and disturbing sign that all is not well with the world… rainy weekends are a time-tested Seattle area tradition.

The 12z ECMWF delivers a very solid cold shot next weekend.  We end up on the back side of a cold ULL with surface gradients becoming northerly.

I have to say I've never seen so much complaining about a strong GOA block during the cold season on here before.  Weird.  For the record a typical Nino pattern would have a trough over the NE Pacific / GOA.

Wasting it now for one thing. Secondly these troughs are pretty weak and splitty and aren't attached to any kind of cold air source.

Actually nino’s have a lot of split flow with inversions.

My thoughts reviewing 12z runs. It's interesting how quickly the block reorganizes. It wouldn't take much to see things turn much colder and not just chilly onshore/northerly flow, but backdoor cold. Mainly amplification. Ya gotta believe! C'MON!!!!

It's really strange here when the easterly pressure gradient is more ESE we get into some pretty serious inversions and when it's ENE it gets very windy with major down slope warming.  Today it's ESE so it's been pretty chilly here compared to many areas.  Looking at a 54 / 32 day so far.  Probably looking at another freeze tonight with this gradient angle.  Pulling for the 100 freezes this season!

That was a huge year.  1984-85 was the big season for that.  1992-93 was another big one.  Looking way back...form what I can tell 1955 / 1956 were the really big years for freezing low temps.  Some places were around 110 for the year 1955.

1985 is the coldest calendar year on record at SLE, and their records date back to 1892. Pretty amazing when you consider they had some pretty warm weather that summer too.
