November 2020 Weather Observations for the PNW

Down to 36 here now might have a midnight low. We’re certainly going to get our first freeze tonight. Lots of places are in the mid 20s.

How did Portland do in 08/09 winter? Ik it was killer for the Puget Sound but idk about down south.

December 2008 was amazing. I am about 6 miles southeast of the Airport, so it's always colder here. The arctic front blew threw on the 13th. We had round after round of snow showers and then the back to back blizzard/snow storms on the 18th and 21st. We had a bit more on Christmas Day too. Christmas Eve I had 30" on the ground. I don't remember January or February 2009 being all that noteworthy. After the December snowpocalypse Winter weather ended for the lowlands. Here is a pic of me December 2008 digging a path to remove the snow from the basement window wells. I would love to see another mega snow storm like that one!

PDX and the valley north of Albany got buried. Had a handful of inches down here in the initial Arctic airmass with a couple of sub-freezing highs, then we moderated and had cold rain for the weekend. Left a lot to be desired here but then there was 2-25-19 that set the standard for our most significant event since Jan, 1969.

Yeah this neighborhood is relatively quiet. There’s a nice park about a 15-20 walk away from where we live.

That we are. I would go much stronger considering the PDX-EUG gradient peaks at an astonishing 15mb and the isobars are aligned perfectly perpendicular across the area! The jet position and orientation may really hammer us this time. This COULD be the time we no longer dodge that bullet of escaping a major regional south wind storm. It's not the classic deep southwesterly trajectory, but several of our wind storms in the past were not as well. I'd like to see the trough axis a bit further south in the coming days.

The EPS looks like it might be going somewhere interesting late in the month.  The control begins tapping into vodka cold as a huge Aleutian block develops, and the mean has a similar look.  Normally these recurring small cold snaps end up leading to something big in the long run.

Rather interestingly the ECMWF now has a cold day next Sunday with a 43 / 32 shown for SEA.  That's new.
