snow_wizard
I made this graphic a few years ago, but I'm sure many on this forum haven't seen it. The graph dramatically illustrates the incredible warming that has taken place in the month of January in Clearbrook WA over the past 100 years or so. Obviously everywhere in the NW has seen the same warming, but it shows up more clearly at this location due to it's easy access to Arctic air when compared to other Western Lowland locations. To me it is astonishing that anywhere in the Western Lowlands actually had a decade average of 33 for the month of January so relatively recently. The 1910s averaged 33.0 while the 1950s averaged almost as cold. Another noteworthy thing that stands out is how abruptly the month of December overtook January as being the coldest month. That suggests this could be a cyclical phenomenon and not just the result of a warming climate. Anyway...this gives a pretty fascinating look at how cold the month of January has been in the fairly recent past. Perhaps we can at least partially return to that with the same abruptness that it ended. Quote Death To Warm Anomalies! BLI snowman
February has now also been colder than January here in 3 consecutive years. A first from what I can tell.

A first from what I can tell. That gives me hope that January should still be able to deliver. If it was only December that was able to deliver the goods and Jan and Feb were both shut down that could be disturbing, but this would seem to indicate that January is huge dose of bad luck more than anything. Since 1980 we have had some really amazing Februaries such as 1985, 1989, 1990, 2014 and 2019. In the same time frame pretty much nothing for January except for a decent week here and there. Would be nice. January 2017 did a lot to right the wrongs of the recent past here but then the last three Januaries have pretty much 100% undone the goodwill from that. The continued failure to see a true regional January event is pretty jarring. You could make a case that 2007 was the last one. and of course even that was a baby by historic standards. Yeah....2007 and 2017 were both decent. 2017 was the only time Lake Meridian froze over all the way across since I've lived here and 2007 had a nice snow followed by several days of cold and clear weather. As you say the last 3 were total turds. Kind of broke the momentum of the better Januaries we had seen 2007 through 2017. In that time we also had decent cold in 2012 and 2013, and 2009 wasn't terrible. Quote Death To Warm Anomalies! Link
With low ice and lack of northerly air it's kinda hard to have an Artic outbreak without a 'trigger' to produce it. It's like having a very powerful gun with powerful bullets but missing the firing pin which you have to know how to DIY.

I still think January is going to shine eventually. No reason it shouldn't be able to if February can deliver. Quote Death To Warm Anomalies!
