December 2020 Weather Observations for the PNW

Three Corner Rock is 29 with east winds gusting to 56.  Amazing they are that cold with the wind like that.  Must be just under the inversion boundary.

You're getting winds up there in the foothills even?

No, I realized when I posted it probably sounded like I was, I was just looking at PDX on the hourly obs. Just took the recycling out. The deck is very frosty!

GEFS not good so far.  Wants to move the ridge right over us by hour 276

It's petty cold around the 10th.  That seems to be a decently likely cold snap now.  I would imagine if the ridge ends up back over us it will be short lived.  The 12z EPS showed a steadily falling PNA in the 10 to 15 day period.

We are in the dead zone too. 40/29 under brilliant sunshine today. Was 38 at Silver Falls when I took my daughter over there this afternoon. Funny story about those ducks, they used to be mine, but I didn’t clip their wings and they flew off, now they live at the state park and we visit them. Lol.

That is pretty funny.   Nice that you can still visit them.

It's really interesting to see how the inversion interacts with the topography in cases like this.  On Squak Mountain near Issaquah it is 36 on the windward side of the mountain and 48 on the leeward side.  Both sensors are over 1000 feet.

Down to 33 now.  If the wind doesn't break through it could get really chilly here tonight.  Nice to get winter off on a frosty foot.

Just had the first "Whoa!" gust of the evening. Well over 40mph.

Pretty healthy gradient tonight.  It appears the wind has found several paths now.  It always amazes me how every one of these situations has it's own unique signature.  I have studied the east wind phenomenon for 20 years now and still get surprised sometimes by the wind not doing what I expect.

it's kind of funny. What I have discovered with ducks are that you can meet their basic needs of food and water, but if you don't make sure they have a nice area to swim, they will leave if they can. The descendants of the first few ducks I had live at our neighbors pond. My wife does a good job filling kiddie pools and such with water in the summer now and that keeps them happy.

Likewise. It's often just a bit different dependent on a myriad of factors. Depth of cold air, strength of inversion, approaching low pressure, thermal trough/inverted trough, rate of pressure rises Eastern Washington to Columbia Basin, etc.

Ah is it? Outstanding.

Washington County, OK > Washington County, OR? I'm thinking yes.

Yeah, it is where Phillips Petroleum was founded, and they still have some Conocco-Phillips corporate offices there. Also a notable frost hollow. They hit -28 in February 2011, breaking their all-time record of -25 from January 1930.

Houses are cheap there too.

Yeah the EPS was nice, and I trust it more than the GEFS.  The GEFS looks like it has 2 camps, one with ridging over us and the other with ridging in Alaska.  The Alaska ridging solution seems to win out in the long run

Looking over both 00z GEFS/CMCE and both show the same signal with retrogression, but not far enough west, then Day 12-13 much sharper retrogression with mean block axis shifting to ~165-160 W. Interesting.
