SilverFallsAndrew
We had a two day storm total of about 12" with that event, we were a but north of the heavier precip. We never had one big storm that month, just consistent 2-6" snow events for the last 3 1/2 weeks of the month. Some of those snowfalls were incredibly wet. We had about 5.5" on the 16th that month which melted down to 1.7" of precip. 1 Quote Snowfall Precip 2022-23: 95.0" 2022-23: 17.39" 2021-22: 52.6" 2021-22: 91.46" 2020-21: 12.0" 2020-21: 71.59" 2019-20: 23.5" 2019-20: 58.54" 2018-19: 63.5" 2018-19: 66.33" 2017-18: 30.3" 2017-18: 59.83" 2016-17: 49.2" 2016-17: 97.58" 2015-16: 11.75" 2015-16: 68.67" 2014-15: 3.5" 2013-14: 11.75" 2013-14: 62.30 2012-13: 16.75" 2012-13: 78.45 2011-12: 98.5" 2011-12: 92.67" It's always sunny at Winters Hill! SilverFallsAndrew
February - March 10, 2019 were a bit much. I realized as much as I love snow there is a limit to how much I want to deal with it. We would have 12 hour interludes of heavy rain every few days and the snow on the roof got extremely heavy with a very thick layer of ice at the bottom. Ended up collapsing part of the shop roof. The temp was pretty much between 28-38 for 5 weeks, so the heavy rain was as cold and raw a rain you can imagine, and the snow was usually very wet and slushy. There was always about 20" of total slop on the ground or when it would freeze you would step and crash through like 5 layers of ice between different snowfall from the constant freezing and refreezing. The lows were not that impressive that month, but the highs were very cold that month, I believe at Silver Falls it was the 5th coldest monthly average high on record (for any month), and easily the coldest average max of any February since 1938. 1 Quote Snowfall Precip 2022-23: 95.0" 2022-23: 17.39" 2021-22: 52.6" 2021-22: 91.46" 2020-21: 12.0" 2020-21: 71.59" 2019-20: 23.5" 2019-20: 58.54" 2018-19: 63.5" 2018-19: 66.33" 2017-18: 30.3" 2017-18: 59.83" 2016-17: 49.2" 2016-17: 97.58" 2015-16: 11.75" 2015-16: 68.67" 2014-15: 3.5" 2013-14: 11.75" 2013-14: 62.30 2012-13: 16.75" 2012-13: 78.45 2011-12: 98.5" 2011-12: 92.67" It's always sunny at Winters Hill! It was the second coldest Feb in Tahoe in over 100 years. Jan 2017 was also too much. We had 90" of wet cement snow in just under 4 days and the liquor store next to my house had the roof cave in. Either way, I was looking at ODOT cameras and the north side of Eugene was ice and snow and south of there was green... I think about the Lane/Douglas County line was as far as the arctic air made it. IIRC correctly there were some spots in Northern Douglas county in the 60s when Eugene was still in the 20s. It was a very very sharp boundary. That first day the snow started, I believe the 6th, that big snow band that set up through Benton, Linn, and Southern Marion county and just dropped ungodly amounts of snow. I remember late that morning I was around Mt. Angel in Northern Marion county and one of my co-workers texted me a picture of a yardstick at their house near Jefferson, and they had almost 15" already, there was only about 2" in Mt. Angel at that point. I went home and we had maybe an inch of new snow (We had a couple inches around the 3rd when the cold air initially moved in. We were just north of the main snow band, as the Santiam Canyon got pummeled, the offshore flow really killed the precip along the foothills too, as the offshore flow was surfacing even here with that event. By late in the evening we only had about 2", but as the last of the moisture moved through the tail end of the heaviest precip moved right over us and we got about 3" in 45 minutes. It cleared out by midnight and the temp dropped to 13, most of the snow fell with temperatures in the low 20s. The next morning we bottomed out at 12, and dawn broke with mostly clear skies. Clouds increased rapidly, and it began snowing heavily again by mid-morning, dropping about 3 inches over the next several hours. The air aloft was warming though, and a warm nose came in along the foothills as the offshore flow weakened. Eugene turned to freezing rain, and by mid-afternoon we switched over to rain and temps warmed above freezing. Down in Silverton/Salem, they kept the low level cold about 18-24 hours longer and ended up with more snow than up here for the event. The intensity of the snowfall with that first event in the Corvallis, Albany, Lebanon areas was pretty comparable to what happened in parts of the PDX metro in January 2017. Overall there was a fairly large swath of 10-20" accumulations/even totals. The really heavy snow band was sort centered on a line from Corvallis/Albany/Lebanon, but there were significant accumulations down to the Eugene area and as far north as Kelso. I'm not sure how much further north there was snow, but I thought there were at least minor accumulations up to the south Sound. 1 Quote Snowfall Precip 2022-23: 95.0" 2022-23: 17.39" 2021-22: 52.6" 2021-22: 91.46" 2020-21: 12.0" 2020-21: 71.59" 2019-20: 23.5" 2019-20: 58.54" 2018-19: 63.5" 2018-19: 66.33" 2017-18: 30.3" 2017-18: 59.83" 2016-17: 49.2" 2016-17: 97.58" 2015-16: 11.75" 2015-16: 68.67" 2014-15: 3.5" 2013-14: 11.75" 2013-14: 62.30 2012-13: 16.75" 2012-13: 78.45 2011-12: 98.5" 2011-12: 92.67" It's always sunny at Winters Hill! Timmy Supercell
Going back through Jan 2017 thread, hard to believe how well NWS Medford handled the southern Oregon storm on the 3rd/4th and I was underestimating how good it was going to be. Medford breaks a daily snowfall record on Jan 3, 8.3" fell (6.8" was the old record). I had my first 12+ inch day. It continued to snow another 6-8" when most folks were sleeping. Event began here 5am 01/03, ending 7am 01/04. The first 12-15 hours of snowfall was fairly light but it picked up fast around 7pm. This was one of the only storms I had personally that required pulling out a yard stick to measure snow. 18.4" was my event total (possible some compaction occurred). Let's hope the models start to pick up on something in the more believable range soon. That low digging off the coast of Asia late in the month is undoubtedly a good sign. At this point the models are kin of treading water while the MJO is pretty much dead. Once a wave emerges or shows signs of emerging the models should react quickly. Not amplified at all, but solidly chilly. 1 1 Quote Snowfall Precip 2022-23: 95.0" 2022-23: 17.39" 2021-22: 52.6" 2021-22: 91.46" 2020-21: 12.0" 2020-21: 71.59" 2019-20: 23.5" 2019-20: 58.54" 2018-19: 63.5" 2018-19: 66.33" 2017-18: 30.3" 2017-18: 59.83" 2016-17: 49.2" 2016-17: 97.58" 2015-16: 11.75" 2015-16: 68.67" 2014-15: 3.5" 2013-14: 11.75" 2013-14: 62.30 2012-13: 16.75" 2012-13: 78.45 2011-12: 98.5" 2011-12: 92.67" It's always sunny at Winters Hill! SilverFallsAndrew
The highs in the Willamette Valley have been very mild this month, but the lows haven't torched so far this month. Not like January 2019 when SLE put up something idiotic like 51/40 for the month. 1 Quote Snowfall Precip 2022-23: 95.0" 2022-23: 17.39" 2021-22: 52.6" 2021-22: 91.46" 2020-21: 12.0" 2020-21: 71.59" 2019-20: 23.5" 2019-20: 58.54" 2018-19: 63.5" 2018-19: 66.33" 2017-18: 30.3" 2017-18: 59.83" 2016-17: 49.2" 2016-17: 97.58" 2015-16: 11.75" 2015-16: 68.67" 2014-15: 3.5" 2013-14: 11.75" 2013-14: 62.30 2012-13: 16.75" 2012-13: 78.45 2011-12: 98.5" 2011-12: 92.67" It's always sunny at Winters Hill! I also just saw they ran a -6.1 departure in February 2019. Truly a great month regionally. Yup most of the CWA down here ranked top 5, couple locations even top 2. How much snow did Medford get? I looked at our old K-Falls station and there was only one February in the 1930's snowier than 2019. OR-KL-5 got 33.4". That's 2nd snowiest February ever using whatever available data we have. 1 Quote Ashland, KY Weather '23-'24 Winter Snowfall - 5.50" First freeze: 11/1 (32) Minimum: 2 on 1/17 Measurable snows: 4 Max 1 day snow: 3" (1/19) Thunders: 11 1/27, 1/28, 2/10, 2/22, 2/27, 2/28, 3/5, 3/6, 3/14, 3/15 3/26, ------------------------------------------------------- [Klamath Falls, OR 2010 to 2021] https://imgur.com/SuGTijl

I think that's the latest I have ever recorded a temperature that cold. No question 2016-17 through 2018-19 was a nice cluster of winters for us. 1 Quote Death To Warm Anomalies!
