December 2020 Weather Observations for the PNW

Omegaraptor

Recommended Posts

I was close to having a white Xmas in 2017. 12/24/17 I had freezing rain and 12/26/17 a tiny bit of evening snow. A picture I took first thing in the morning 12/26/2017 shows a bare ground, though with a nice freeze.

2018/2019 were both White Christmas occurrences. A bonus if I had a third one in a row.

If the low comes in around Cape Blanco and bombs then the cold air dam would fill the entire valley like a bathtub. Just need enough banding.

If someone can make a post that pretty much puts a fork in winter, I can recommend that. Maybe there is a bit of reverse card juju going on here or maybe we need to bring people back to earth with warm maps, gate keeping, and tone policing.

I was gonna say, the two recommended posts right now are aging about as well as a parking lot snow pile at the North Bend Safeway on a 65 degree MLK day.

51/40 down this way on that day. If one wasn't a weather enthusiast, they would have had no idea that there was anything interesting happening somewhere in the region. Further illustrating how shitt this location is. I want our family to move so badly.

I like you TWL, but I can all but guarantee you that 95% of the population of the utopia of Indiana would kill for Eugene's climate and scenery, and you would too after a short time there. I know you aren't exactly keen on Eugene's increasing summer temps. I'm just fine with it, however, as I don't mind some low humidity 90's. But try Indiana for a week. It can be more humid there than the gulf coast states. 80 degree dew points. 120+ heat indexes aren't that uncommon anymore. Brown, crusty snow with no hills or tall green trees also gets pretty old after about 2 hours. The lack of snow here is what makes the snowfall we get that much more enjoyable.

Sure it's special, but also agonizing when it feels like it's taking increasingly longer amounts of time between significant regional events. And the summers there would be hot and humid but the spring would bring excitement and thunderstorms.

Is the snow there usually brown and crusty? At what location in the midwest does that change, if at all? It's all that Canadian shield plain right?

Amazing to think the December 1990 blast was 30 years ago. I remember it pretty well. I got my first dog that Christmas. Even harder to believe the 08’ event was 12 years ago already. Time flies. Both beautiful memories for sure.

Coldest temps I've ever experienced. I was 6 at the time and the local TV station thermometer read 12F.

That would be a HUGE help in getting a major arctic blast in the PNW.

18z GFS is even crazier. 10mb temp anomalies peak at a whopping +62°C on Dec 30th, verbatim.

Looks structurally similar to the SSW during the 2nd half of January 2019.

We all know what followed ~ 2 weeks later.
