3yrs ago it was all about the Kona Low, 2yrs ago it’s all about the Retrogression, and last year it was all about the Low Solar.

I think about page 50 is the start of the event.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Another late winter that turned things around. 1-2" night of the 4th that stuck around without even melting off the trees for 5 days. Followed by about an inch the morning of March 7 and 1-2" on the 9th.

Morning of February 5th.

It's actually good to start with the last few days of Jan when the first glimmers approached. The night shift was the first to pick up on it with one of the BC posters (I forget who) and myself noticing it. I'm pretty sure I immediately scoffed and assumed a rug-pull was in order but Tim's EPS set the record straight.

I took this on the evening of the 5th.

Very windy and cold, but not a lot of snow down by the water.

And leading up to 2-25-19 I remember being pretty quietly doubtful.

What is going to push that SSW out to the NW a little more?

Edit: Or even W/SW would work.

The PV climo position is at the pole, and the stratospheric high climo position is over the NPAC. The warming is a result of subsidence and compressional heating inside/around the vortex as it is breached by the NPAC strat high. That’s why the anomalies show up where they do.

That’s a temp anomaly at about 100k feet. Little bearing directly on the weather below.  What it does say is that cold air high up will be forced down, somewhere.  From what I understand it does increase chances of Arctic air and lower latitudes.

You’ve got it.

I just noticed most of the observations from Western WA already show cloudy skies.  That's going to kill the low temp potential for many.  Here it is clear and already down to 33.  The ECMWF advertised low clouds, but not this early.

If that vodka cold can find it's way to North America we could have some fun times coming.  We'll just have to wait and see.  Tons of potential going forward, but we have a ways to go.

My favorite day of February 2019 was the 10th, went from perfectly clear to snow in less than 5hrs, and that snow continued into all day of the 11th. So fun!
