Here is that nice little corner I was talking about a few days ago. After the next snowstorm I'm coming here hopefully to take night time shots, if I don't get mugged. 🤪

I was due for some exercise. Some will disagree but I need some soggy afternoons like this in K-Falls.

My wife who grew up there thinks I would like living in K Falls. As you know my brother lived right up the street from you for a time. I don’t think he was a huge fan, but it may have been more his job.

I must have now acclimated to my winter here. I thought 33 during my downtown trek wasn't all that cold.

Can't find anything from Clinton, but here is the greater OKC area.

And a link to a pretty useful map

Are you saying that after a low of 22F on Christmas morning it projects a high of 38F to occur by 4:00am the same morning?  That seems a bit unlikely.  Am I missing something?  If so, it won't be the first time that's for sure.

The 22F is on Christmas eve morning the 24th. As for the 25th, it shows a likely midnight high of 38F dropping down to 32F by 4am which is where the forecast ends. Hope that makes sense!

Interestingly enough the EURO shows strong NW winds as the frontal boundary slides back south after giving Seattle some snow. Correct me if I’m wrong but wintertime northwesterly wind events aren’t terrible frequent.

Not super common.  It requires a surface low to cross the Cascades south of Seattle.  That is often a great track for snow in the Seattle area.  I know that Nov 2010 had NW winds in my area at least and the Seattle City records show a really nice snowstorm with NW winds and plunging temps in January 1902.  I'm sure there are plenty of others.

Sorry. It's just something that is tossed around here quite a bit on the 10 day meteograms that always makes me cringe.

On a positive note, it's nice to finally see some GOA blocking around day 15 and I think the early next week trough could be a nice little warning shot!

Finally? It’s been showing ridging there for two weeks. It just keeps staying at the magical 15 days out crap. Never moves up and probably never will. Not our winter, not our time. Maybe next year guys.

Actually that is not right.  For awhile, it was showing ridging over the PNW and troghing in the GOA.  This, for example:

Don't look now, but mesoscale models are latching onto a solution for some strong winds over Washington, sending a 990mb low across the Olympic Peninsula. Of course they're in direct conflict with all the other global models, but it's worth watching. Intuition says these lows are too strong on the mesoscale models.

Yeah it's been pretty apparent for a while that meridional flow followed by a ridge over us for Christmas was the general pattern progression that models saw coming. GOA blocking after Christmas has been shown on the weeklies for a while and now, encouragingly, ensembles are picking it up too.

Definitely not a "always at 15 days" thing. Although I think he was partly just trolling with that comment.

Meridional flow would be blocky.

I suppose quasi-zonal flow would be a better description for the pattern prior to Christmas.

Although the alternating ridge/trough in a still progressive pattern says more 'meridional flow' to me than a stark GOA block that shuts down the Pacific. Semantics.

I guess it comes down to time scale.  Generally the pattern stays very much progressive through the solstice.  Beyond that the return to some form of a +PNA meridional gig looks to get going, at least temporarily.  Beyond that, get your dart board.

Wonderful. Shift everything 200-300 miles west and it would be even better, I'm sure.

The last four GFS runs all build a major block in the Pacific. This is the first one to put the block in a legit favorable position.

Something just happened.

I don't know what it was but I just got a shiver and a vision of frozen landscapes.....like a massive shift just occurred.

I can sense it.

We better watch the models close because this could be BIG!

Full on disturbance in the force stuff.

Disclaimer: This happened after several bong hits and a shot of Jack but I am sure the two are unrelated.🤪
