First snow of the year! Melting quick but at least a little left. Was down south picking up a new family member.

Beautiful morning in the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon. It was 12F when I took these pics around 8:30am. Gotta get our winter fix somehow.

Major shift on the 12z EPS to lower heights over the West with rising heights in the SE compared to the 00z last night. Looking like a really fun mid month on through the Holidays. Perfect timing IMO!

More clouds moving in, overcast now. Still 36, that could be our high.

What a gorgeous map. Even Steens and the Warner Mountains get buried.

Should look awesome with the Christmas lights still up.  Last year only got on measly 1 or 2 inches while the lights were up.  Was really hoping to have some good Christmas pictures but early January works too......probably leave them up until mid-month.

A solidly cool 43/27 day here. Frosty start followed by sunny skies and a light east wind. Some scenic high clouds making for a nice sunset now. Down to 40.

Hope everyone has a nice Christmas Eve. 🎄 🎅🏿

Yeah, and the encouraging thing about these setups is that they are a scenario where the models tend to underestimate the depth and persistence of a low level cold pool. Rather than CAA based setups where the opposite is true.

Looks like a close shave with mid level warm advection, but it’s at least something to look at.

It's well worth noting the 12z EPS control was really good in early Jan once again.  That's three consecutive runs.

GOA block definitely trying to form at the end of the run. I can see signs of a ridge bridge if that -NAO remains in tact after the SSW. Good times ahead in my opinion.

Looks like a very bullish signal on the ECMWF weeklies for the last half of January to be cold in the NW.  The control begins the cold before the 10h.

It actually picks up on changes before other models rather frequently.  Sometimes it overdoes intensity though.

I saw that too, but it has been pointed out that the weeklies had been showing that for earlier in January, and keeps delaying it.  But I love the pattern for the next few weeks for my area.  Getting snow tomorrow afternoon and evening and probably lots more in the next few weeks.  Hopefully the west side people can get their fair share too at some point.

Looks like the gorge should get some solid snow with the system coming in tomorrow.  Should help out with that low level cold pool. Hopefully there is a bit less WAA with that mid week overrunning event, seems close enough to at least watch.

It will be interesting to see how much low level cold develops over the weekend into early next week. It should be a fairly chilly airmass.

NWS not expecting snow in the Gorge, but Mark Nelsen does. Wonder who I am going to go with... ;)

37/11 today. Funny airport says there was light snow a few hours ago, there hasn't been a peep of moisture all day.

I think it's going to be one of those things where all of a sudden the models will pick upon something big and it will be relatively short notice when it happens.  Looks like MJO could be a factor coming up with a possible 2 or 3 emergence.  I think we'll be fine.

Phone app forecast showing a sub-40 high!!! This is not a drill!

The 27 degree low on Monday ain't bad either.  Finally getting some recurring cold.

I said this earlier, but a SSW event either occurring or imminent could shake up all the models.
