December 2020 Weather Observations for the PNW

Ended up having bomb down to Seattle this morning to pick up my son after his Bellingham flight got screwed up.  Left about 7am and there was crazy dense/freezing fog in places, and 2-3 pretty big accidents on the northbound side.  For the most part the roads felt like they were treated going southbound, but there was a couple of times I questioned the quality of the grip my tires had on the roadway.  The ship canal bridge was quite sketchy as well, the fog was super dense and it was kinda spooky to be that far up in the air and only be able to see 75-100yds of road surface and bridge girders, and just....nothing beyond that.

Looks like we bottomed out at 25 and just hit 35, snow is still hanging on.  I'm impressed with the tenacity of this round of snow.  My neighbor's roof is finally about 80% melted, but the ground is still mostly covered.

Wow, it looks like BLI actually got down to 23 between hourly observations! Impressive.

Yeah, I just went for a walk downtown, and there's still a good covering of snow in the shade. Even a few patches on sidewalks here and there. It's great to have the sun + snow combination which isn't always so easy to come by in these parts.

The freezing fog also has left a really cool layer of thick frost crystals on the snow, which I've never seen before. It must have been dense indeed to do that! Sounds like something out of a Stephen King novel.

When it's a sheet of ice there isn't much anyone can do.  It comes down to road maintenance.

My post was 100% sarcastic. When it’s that icy you are probably fukced.  But I’m still Curious if any of those drivers had it 1st gear to at least give themselves a chance.

I have no idea why people are so convinced nothing will happen until March.  Nothing to support that really.  FWIW there are some Marches that have had the real deal anyway.

I didn't say we would get nothing till March.

Just hoping for some action in March. 🥴

Eugene is actually colder than many other places up north.

Medford is even reading couple degrees cooler than me, but the sun being out may have something to do with that.

Out of left field, but........I can't believe homes are still being roofed here due to the June 30th storm here.  Of the 300-400 homes around here I would bet you 250 or so have been re-roofed. And probably half have new fences.

Oh, and there are flakes falling in and around Atlanta this early evening there.

Does show a good pattern mid to late month.  These are 5 day averages.  Ventrices model shows a flip late in the month.  I also think there will be bigger changes to models when the SSW starts

No doubt in my mind that we will see big model shifts once the SSW starts to unfold.

It wouldn't surprise me to see the east get hit with big cold to start off the new year but then see the cold head west mid-late January.

Any word from your source regarding when it’ll snow here?

I usually see the high temp for the day between 2-3 at my house in the winter (sun angles, trees, etc), currently sitting at 36.7, so I'm thinking we are going to fall short of 40 again today.

I thought that was May 30th, unless two different storm events happened. I completely missed that one narrowly but regionally a nice outbreak.

40 and sunny here. Was pretty foggy earlier though.

Still 37 so a solid chance we get our first sub 40 high of the winter.

I'd say this run is a step in the right direction. Wish it were more amplified, though. Chilly for the entire west coast at the least, though. -ENSO-like.

Temperature peaked at 38˚F this afternoon. Now 36˚F and falling. Third sub-40˚F day in a row. Overnight low was 24˚F making for a mean of 31˚F, first subfreezing mean temperature of the season.

Ground is still white, so unless it really warms up and thaws overnight, a White Christmas is a lock.

It's called clown range for a reason.
