The hits just keep on coming. Only picked up about an additional half inch to an inch of snow in Omaha this morning, but it caused a lot of problems for the morning commute - very slow going out there.

It is absolutely crazy to think that in this relatively warm winter pattern that we are in "bonus time" when it comes to snowfall, as we have surpassed our seasonal average of 28" (currently sitting at 29.9" for the season).

It's insane how much snow we've gotten with torch thus far. If we move towards below average temps in Feb-March, I could easily see KLNK making a run at a 50"+ season.

Yeah you guys in Nebraska were much warmer than eastern Iowa (and often are), in the last month especially, since here we had snow cover for around a month now plus many cloudy days. But my idea is we get more snow when it’s not so cold (teens or colder) as milder air (mid to high 20°s) usually means less suppression, plus milder air aloft and surface holds more moisture for heavier snow as long as it stays below freezing and are on the right side of a system. The 2007- ‘08 season was probably my area’s snowiest on record, and I can’t remember that being a really cold winter.

Seems like an improvement from the 2018-19 debacle at least

God, how abysmal they handled that blizzard was ridiculous. Even Omaha was less of a nightmare than Lincoln was in the few days after.

I stepped outside a minute ago and the moon is shining bright tonight.  With the fresh blanket of snow, it is reflecting the light and looks so beautiful.  It's really a wonderful, cold, crisp evening as we have clear skies and the stars are twinkling bright.  Heading for the coldest overnight low of the season tonight.  Current temp 14F.

12Z Canadian is a good hit for my area.  Much different than 0z.  Not loading on pivotal weather or tropical tidbits so I had to go to meteocentre.  Can never see as much detail, but not bad.

How is it for my area? I'm hoping this thing at least clips my area, these types of systems that seem to cut tend to go either way for my area. Usually bodes well for areas along and north of the river.

I've said it before, but this is my type of winter. We're running 6 degrees above average this month after being 5 degrees above average in November and December. And we've hit our seasonal average for snowfall. Even crazier is that despite all the warmth, we really haven't had a system that was rain and 33 degrees. When there's been precip, it's still been all snow falling for the most part.

That describes 07-08 here to a "T"

Attm, its 18F under mostly cloudy skies. I was out running errands earlier today and it felt great seeing a "January" look. Everybody was bundled up, snowcover everywhere, an angry looking cloudcover , a mean, bitter wind blowing and I could just go on and on and on and on.

I’m sure liking it like this. These big storms are more fun than clippers with bitter blasts following! I had -3° this morning, which was the coldest temperature so far, but calm conditions helped.

Yes, and I will gladly bust on that part and own it.  How about my calls for winter storms to pass through?  Don't you think Snow is more important for winter enthusiasts than experiencing extreme cold and brown grass???  Snow on Snow in an AN pattern is rare.  Wouldn't you agree?  The pattern ended up cold enough to support snow and the west-based Greenland Block paid dividends, esp for these parts when you take into consideration how abysmal the winter has been through mid Jan.  Then suddenly, the storms came, the block influenced the pattern and viola...by months end, ORD may conceivably end up with nearly 20" of snow for the month and AN for the snow season to date.  That's incredible after such a slow start.  The block has, and will, pay dividends into the foreseeable future.  I think many on here will agree with me.

It looks like the official low at Grand Rapids was +12 if so this would be the 2nd coldest low at Grand Rapids this winter season. It dropped to 11 back on the 23rd. Here at my house the low was +10. It has not been 0 or below at Grand Rapids since February 1st 2019. At the current time it is partly cloudy and 18 here. I have 2.5″ of snow on the ground.

A surprise before midnight on the 31st is possible, but it looks highly likely that 8 will be the coldest temp of Jan at KLNK. This will be the 5th warmest on record (back to 1886). Though it'll also be the 2nd or 3rd snowiest on record (back to 1900), so that kind of makes up for it.

Easy Tom. I was referencing the cold that kept showing up on the Euro and/or GFS 2 always 2 weeks away here in January and now we're at the end of the month and it never materialized.

And as I've stated before, this is my favorite type of winter, average to above average temps with above average snowfall. We're at 2x our normal snowfall so far this year (30" vs 15").

I cleared my deck just now and before I did I took a few measurements and they average out to 5.5".  Hopefully by Sunday I'll have a solid double digit snow pack.  Driving around town today with all the snow covered pines, roofs and buildings while enjoying a 100% sunny day, I was marveled by the beauty of the winter landscape.  It was so bright outside I had to put on the shades.  Topped out at 32F today which felt warm in the sun.  You can already sorta feel those suns rays as the sun angle has risen from the depths in late December.

Here at my house I have recorded 1.7" of new snow fall so far. At this time light snow is falling with a reading of 25.

While this January will end up above average is the temperature department. We will not know the final numbers until tomorrow but the high for the month was only 41 that will be the coldest maximum for any January since 2009. The low for the month was a mild 11 and that will be the warmest minimum since 2006 and the 7th warmest in Grand Rapids recorded history. The total snow fall will end up well below average but there will have been a total of 23 days with at least one inch on the ground at Grand Rapids and only 2 days with no snow reported on the ground.

Well- Jan 2021' is in the books and here at KDSM we recorded 20.2" of snowfall - good for 5th place all time. image.png.228e37e8fc14f77c566be8edc0346846.pngthis  follows DEC 2020 that was ranked #10 All Time with 17.1"  image.png.5b0735765528dc93813217f58b105118.pngThe two months combined (37.3") were good for 4th all time for snowiest DEC/JAN's -- not bad. On pace  here for a top 10 to even top 5 snowiest winter!!!  image.png.9686c7e6bb7a08aacdb7224b12cea2e1.png

KC climate summary for January.

The climate for January 2021 in Kansas City can be categorized as wet and warm. The average temperature of 34.1 degrees was 5.3 degrees above normal and the 22nd warmest on the 133-year record. We had over twice the normal precipitation at 2.47" which was 1.40" abv normal and the 18th wettest on record. Snow was 5.1" which was 0.5" above normal and the 54th snowiest on record.

Perhaps the most interesting stat for Jan 2021 in KC is the coldest temperature we had for the month was only 18 degrees. This is the 4th warmest cold temperature for any January on the 133-year record. Only 2 nights for the month had below normal lows...1/3 when we hit 19...and 1/28 when we hit 18. The other 29 days of the month had lows that were above normal and 1 that was right at normal.

From Oct-Jan, Topeka has only had 5 days where the daily high temp was 32 or lower. The lowest high temp was 28. Not sure how this stacks up record wise, but it illustrates how warm it has been here. (See monthly temp anomalies in my signature line)

High temp days (and temps) of 32 or lower...

January snowfall total at KLNK was 18.9" (3rd snowiest) and precip was 1.53" (8th wettest). Also 4.2 degrees above average. Not in any top 10, but still very warm. I've surprisingly decided a good time to live in Lincoln, Nebraska. Snow records in 2018-19 and now again just 2 years later.
