December 29th - 30th Snowstorm

Radar shows very heavy snow here for the next two hours.  A couple more hours of daylight would be nice, but I can't be greedy.

Washington, IA (south of Iowa City) is in the mix now, but the initial snow was so heavy they picked up 6.8".

Just measured 5.5".  The southern edge has back filled a little and is pushing more easterly.  Looks like areas in south central Iowa showed up on radar briefly going to mix and now back to snow.  If that is the case, I've got an easy 3 more hours of this heavy snow.  May not get to 10", but 8" seems likely.  We got 7.5 or 8" in March a couple years ago (i'd have to check my records), which is the largest I've seen in 5 years.  This could very well top it.

Latest changes from NOAA: WOW!

The consistent trend in the model data has been towards a colder
solution for the event tonight/Wednesday. Current observations are
certainly eyebrow raising with surface dewpoints running in the
teens. First part of the event will begin this evening as lead 800-
600mb warm advection wing lifts into Southeast Michigan. Plan view
and cross section analysis depict sharp frontal structure on the 298-
305Ke surfaces that system relative isentropic ascent will be
maximized on. X-section also show that a good connection exists
between this midlevel frontal forcing with upper level jet forcing
aloft. Very low static stability above the frontal surface with
perhaps the models even suggesting some window for convectively
unstable lapse rates at 600mb. Tally of QPF from the breadth of
model solutions point to a brief 2 hour period of Moderate to Heavy
snowfall rates from south to north between 02-08Z.

It's pounding here.  Unfortunately, the back edge of the heavy snow is quickly approaching Cedar Rapids.  The winners may be just south.

Most of the earlier lightning flashes were east and west of here, but finally in the last few minutes I’ve seen 2 flashes. Barely hear the thunder with all of the wind. Can’t really call it thunder snow (like usual😕)as it mostly stayed grauple, sleet & snow. I’m only around 6” so it really cut in to accumulations.

I might be one of the lower amounts in the metro.☹️
Looks like even the always low airport recorded 6.8” of snow and lots of other 7-8” reports.

Measured 7.5” of snow in my backyard in Southwest Omaha... took the kids out sledding just a bit ago and we had a blast!
