This is now clear that there are 2 different storms/energy.   New thread? Or change the thread title?

There already is a new thread for the second wave.

So what’s the timeframe on this system?

NWS Hastings really downplaying the storm, but a good explanation of what went wrong for those of us wanting a big storm.

“This trough remains positively tilted as it ejects from the Rockies on Tuesday, and it does not phase with the northern stream wave very well. Therefore, what previously looked like a significant winter storm is starting to look like more of a typical winter system for most of central Nebraska and northern Kansas. Precipitation will start out as snow Monday night, with models depicting a bit of lull in precipitation Tuesday morning. Then precipitation should redevelop over the bulk of the forecast area from Tuesday mid morning through the afternoon. Due to relatively strong warm-air advection, this will feature a mixture of precipitation types. Right now it looks like this will range from a mixture rain and freezing rain in portions of central and northern Kansas to steady snow for areas along and north of I-80. Additionally, we will likely see some some periods of sleet/graupel and freezing drizzle as models show the dendritic layer struggling to fully saturate through the daytime of Tuesday. Long story short, we will have a wintry mix through the daytime of Tuesday. This will bring the potential for wintry impacts to the entire area, but the threat for heaviest snow still appears to be north of I-80. Therefore the Winter Storm Watch was just issued for these areas. Regarding snowfall totals, there is still some significant discrepancies between models, but the overall trend has been for lighter snowfall totals. GEFS and EPS ensembles snows 4-7" near and north of I-80 with 1-4" for areas to the south. Models have also sped up with the passage of this system, and the area should be largely dry by midnight Tuesday.”

If the 18z GFS is right (big if) Tuesday afternoon will be a beautiful sight in much of Iowa. 5” in 6 hours for Iowa city.

And here's why, quite a lot of lift and moisture advection in the DGZ. Little toasty at 800mb, and the GFS still switches to sleet, but is now only accompanied by the NAM in doing so.

There could be some pretty heavy snow with the surge of deep moisture into the area Tuesday evening.

Probably one of the few times when a trend towards a pos tilt/progressive wave is a good thing for the majority of posters. Not quite the impressive totals shown earlier (though when you factor in the NYD system, they could end up near there for somebody), but the area of appreciable (4"+) snow has expanded dramatically.

Weathermodels.com appears to include sleet/mix in their snow total.  Pivotals's map is very different.
