We are going to be watching this potential for about three weeks before anything potentially happens. Exhausting work.

Good thing we have Andrew here to make it feel twice as long!

That wretched cutoff low within the block brings a quick end to any real cold.

Need to bring the -NAO back for any sort of prolonged cold.

It also is the method for delivering us a nice snowstorm on each of the past two runs. We'll take what we can get.

The block is still largely in place right on through the end of the last two GFS runs. It's a nice pattern for sustained snow and cold opportunities.

Power out here so the generator is up and running. Ended up having a few gusts to 45 mph which ties my record high. Pretty sure this was the strongest storm since the Hannukah Eve Storm. Took a drive around the area and saw probably over a hundred trees down. If I followed all the road closed signs I wouldn't have actually be able to leave my road as there are lines down at one end and a leaning power pole at the other. Couple houses in the neighborhood also have trees down on them although it doesn't look like much serious damage.

2.28” of rain yesterday was the 7th wettest day ive recorded here at this location. Definitely was also one of the strongest windstorms I’ve seen in the last 10 years. Didn’t lose power...but saw lots of substation flashes and lots of light flickering. Gusts maxed out 55-57mph. Had some pretty decent pressure rises of roughly 5mb per hour 2 hours straight.

Sounds like you guys had a wild night. 💨 Hope everyone is alright.

If there’s an upside, that wind might have Darwinized the tree canopy to some extent. Get rid of the weak wood and make room for the strong wood.

I am liking the evolution of Kona low on west side of Hawaiian islands.  These things can be more or less sort of a good anchor to lock in a cold pattern for the PAC NW.
Jan 1980 is best example.  Believe there was one Feb 2019 as well.

It should be known that Hawai’i is often NOT the place to go to escape winter cold in SEA/PDX

On a conference call with a few coworkers living out in North Bend and Sammamish and it sounds like this was the worst windstorm in at least a decade. Looking over the radar for Everett, that low hit in that sweet spot that leaves us wind shadowed when winds are at their strongest.

Power is out here... and everywhere in the valley.   But very few trees down or much in the way of visible damage.

Euro and NAM both showed that happening. They showed a thin line of basically zero wind through Central Snohomish County around 1am while Seattle was still gusting near 50.

Looks like most of western WA is only supposed to get 0.25”-0.5” of rain over the next week...fairly weak systems with some dry days in the mix. Nice day currently too!

Went to work for a bit, this chunk of tree just missed the building but did nuke the fence. Cell tower is down and no power so I didn’t have that option for working on my phone, so I came home to work. No power here as well but I have the satellite internet running on the generator. What a lovely storm that was...Hopefully just the warmup to the epicness coming soon!

HughesNet and I hate it.
It’s awful with speed, can’t stream without constant buffering, and they charge overage fees. But it’s really the only option around here at the moment.

EPS has a stronger ridge, deeper trough, and colder 850s from about day 7 through at least day 10

Good. Yeah what the operational Euro tries to do with the energy dropping down the backside of the ridge in the 7-10 day range seems to be a pretty common error for that model in that timeframe (although sometimes it ends up being correct). Hopefully the EPS prevails.
