January 2021 weather observations for the PNW

Don't like this run? Wait until the next one for something different. Verification scores of all models right around Day 5 has been very poor, so they aren't handling the upper level pattern very well which as we know can lead to rather significant changes from run-to-run.

Dang on the EPS the PV lobe nearly phases with the BC trough. Op runs aren't even close to doing that. If future runs kick that PV lobe further west we're in for a real nice surprise Saturday night - Wednesday. C'MON!!!!

And the full run. I think I like how it ends.

Never gonna happen but would be a great way for conservatives to steal 2 more senators.

A lot of states are very divided politically and splitting them up like that would be a pretty terrible idea across the board.

Unless they plan on increasing taxes to increase their revenue (or decrease spending), it would be a very bad idea for them to do that.

Blame social media, mainstream media, and too many politicians to count. We MUST go back to the basic principles of treating others as you want to be treated, and stop caring about what people believe, or their beliefs. Social media has paved the way to incredible division. If you use social media for shared interests or groups, that's okay, but if you use it to discuss politics, hell no.

Really looking like the best we'll get is some occasionally low snow levels, mainly at night/morning, with maybe a slushy inch or two in some spots below 1000-1500'. Maybe more if everything aligns perfectly, which in the PNW is not too common. I'll still take that over what we've had so far this winter though. Something is better than nothing.

I'm still holding out hope we can score a more substantial event around the beginning of February once the ridge starts to hopefully move east again, which some ensembles have been hinting at. We shall see.

First ten days of February will make or break it!

29 degrees this morning. The trend is not our friend currently.

For the country at large, it appears the initial SSW is going to have had little impact beyond shaking up the Aleutian Low pattern. But as far as any significant arctic air or PV displacement, there's still nothing in sight. Just another really warm winter...

To those yesterday wondering where the "GFS Hi-res" went on Pivotal, it looks like they just incorporated it into the current GFS maps. It says this in a banner on top of the page:

"We now plot GFS data every 3 h out to day 10 worldwide. Hi-res fields are also now used to produce more detailed surface, QPF, and snow plots."

Home Wx Station Stats (Since January 2008):

Amazing how in once we get within 5 days of an event this winter, it just completely disappears. Between the 18z and 00z the goods disappeared, and they were damaged goods to begin with.
