Though in all fairness, that is definitely an AKV pattern. EPS is usually pretty good but not perfect, so we'll see.

Yeah, in many ways that was our best and most consistent winter in decades. A fluke of sorts, and one that will only be increasingly rare in the future as the climate continues to warm.

Hey if the trade off is getting rid of those soul crushing summer marine layer days in the low 70s, I'll gladly take it!!!

Don't think so, and at this point in 2019 we were at least staring down a pretty impressively bitter arctic airmass that was forming in Canada and swung down into the Midwest, right before we got cold. Chicago dropped to -23 with that. Their coldest temp this winter so far is 8 with nothing colder looking possible any time soon.

Yeah the current pattern is nothing close to January 2019.

The SSW event that month dropped the Polar Vortex into the Northeast and then the upper level pattern caused it to pivot west by early February. When that happened, the PNW got cold. Right now, the Polar Vortex is on the other side of the pole. North America won't get arctic cold under this pattern.

This is not an AK vortex pattern.

Yeah there’s no indication of an AL pattern returning any time soon, and nina climo suggests it’s very unlikely all the way until ULL season starts in a couple months.

Funny story...our coldest temp so far has been 23F...all the way back on Oct 26...

We are likely going to go 4 consecutive winters without a sub-freezing high, which has never happened in the record books.

Our only snow storm (6"+) this winter was way back on Nov 8th which is also the only day where we have had a high temp below 32F this winter. At 6300' in the Sierra!

I don't think anyone thought we would have a historically bad winter this year.

It is sunny and nice out and there are shady puddles that are still partially frozen. This is winter at its best!

Glad to see you've come around.

Think my lowest temp this season so far was 27 which I think was in November? I don’t even know anymore. Pathetic.

Victoria Gonzalez and Esquimalt have both managed to avoid anything at all below freezing thus far this fall/winter. Impressive!

This year so far is to winter what 2015 was to summer.

Unfortunately we still have yet to see a genuinely cool summer since that point, either...

Jesse will forever be haunted by the fact that some people actually enjoy warm summer weather.   It makes me smile every time he exaggerates preferences. 😄

We're also allowed to lament such weather which causes firestorms where we have air quality so bad that I have to wear a gas mask in the fuckking house.

Just like you get to bag on persistent warm-frontal drizzle.

I will gladly take a drizzly bummer summer if it means no smokefest.

Both are annoying extremes in my opinion.   But nature can be a b*tch sometimes.

I'm thinking about planting a palm tree in my backyard this spring. Any suggestions for the best species in this Mediterranean climate?

My parents in Scappoose have successively grown palm trees and banana trees in their backyard for the last few years. It’s some thing that is always been possible if you do it right

Canary Island Date Palm.

Canary Island Date Palm - Hello Hello Plants & Garden Supplies

There are some growing on the southern OR coast and they're doing great. Temps below 15F will harm them if not protected, but we don't get that cold anymore so you're fine.

You are safe with the most sensitive ones to cool weather since we don’t even get cool weather anymore. Plant away!!

Those look great, but I've never seen one thrive in Eugene. I'm guessing something like this would be my best choice. It can deal with some chilly temps.

18z is actually a fair bit snowier at face value.

Gives us a little bit Sunday morning Seattle North, then another round of light snow Sunday night into Monday morning and has another period of lowland snow Tuesday morning. Spits out about 4" for Seattle through Tuesday morning. Lots of 33-35 degree slop, but nice to see some improvement.

Hopefully it pans out! I’d be happy with just some snow in the air at times...and a slushy accumulation.
