In both the 1973-76 and 1998-01 multi-year Ninas, our coldest airmass came in that first winter.

I would say that does NOT bode well for 2021-22 and very likely for 2022-23 as well. This week could be the pinnacle of winter for quite a little while.

You forgot about the multi-year nina from 1948-1950....

Russia has been in the icebox for over a month now. Impressive stuff.

Even in the LAMEST WINTER EVER, Spain has already seen their coldest temperature on record (normally balmy Madrid fell to 3 degrees), and Beijing saw their coldest temps since 1966 earlier this month.

Feels like lots of other places globally have been breaking cold and snow records all over the place in the last few years. Hopefully our turn will come soon.

Is your brother a weather fanatic too?   I don't think I have ever talked to my sister about weather statistics.   And if I did... it would be a very short conversation.  😃

Compact SUV. Leaning towards either a Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, or Honda CR-V. The CX-5 has a significant lead at the moment based off of reviews and online pics/videos. Love the look of it and it supposedly handles really well. I'm excited to test drive it. CR-V is more 'blah' in the looks category but I have to include it since it's Honda.

I like the looks of the CX-5 also, though we ended up buying a 2016 Hyundai Tucson a couple of years ago.  Very solid car but not AWD. Probably would go that route next time.   Nissan Rogue seems good also.

Gotta have something to freak out about. Be it our gradually declining winters, increasingly corrupt politicians, or the inordinately bad weather luck for one little neighborhood in Springfield. :(

I work on more Mazda vehicles at my shop than many other brands. I'd pick honda. Subaru is not the car it once was, we see massive transmission problems.

Yeah, he follows it, he has a weather stations and keeps records. He is a member of this forum, though I don't think he has ever posted. He lucked out living in The Dalles during the winter of 2016-17. Got his fix in before moving to the south coast.

My wife has had back to back CX-5’s and loved/loves them both. She got the 2020 with the turbo and the thing really scoots.  That was my only complaint about the 2017 was that it was pretty gutless.

My preferences can beat up your preferences’ dad.

I have a 2008 CR-V and honestly love it. It now has 210,000 miles on it and I haven't had any problems with it so far (knock on wood). Sure it does't look great and it's not going to win any acceleration contests any time soon, but it gets me where I want to go without a problem even when I don't treat it as best as I should.

Oh, and I guess to make it weather related, it seems to work well in the snow.

Had my winter low of 22.9 this morning, currently 28.  The 6Z was sure a nice run.  The thrill of a cold and snowy run, though short lived, gives one a bit of hope for the future.  Fire up those floodlights, almost time to start checking for the always elusive snow-blobs.

Still a chance of a little something for the Puget sound region Tuesday night/Wednesday morning for the lower elevations. Much better chance than tomorrow. It’ll probably be one of those mornings where my elevation makes a big difference at 300’. There’s been many times with set ups similar to this where sea level just gets wet flakes and up here on the hill we get accumulating snow. One prime example was 11/3/17. Nothing at sea level but 0.5” up here at 300’.

Tacoma WA elevation 300’

Monthly rainfall-3.56”

Warm season rainfall-11.14”

Max temp-88

+80 highs-2

+85 highs-2

+90 highs-0

It hasn’t snowed one flake in the eight months my wife has had her 2020 CX-5 and it has destroyed a snow shovel.

+1 for mazda.  By far best bang for your buck and haven't had issues yet.

I'd only ever get a suburu if it was for the WRX....and since they stopped making the hatch version...no ty.

+1 for the CX-5.  We have one and it rides very smooth and handles awesome on icy roads, better than my pickup.

12z Euro shows a persistently chilly pattern for the PNW with low snow levels at times. Not really much in the way of blocking though. Hopefully that will return at some point in February.

The Cascades and Sierras look to start making up lost ground for snowpack in a very big way.
