January 2021 weather observations for the PNW

Really would appreciate if the 00z 12km Nam is correct. Shows about an inch of snow here tonight (I'll just choose to ignore the 3 km, the accumulated snowfall map, the HRRR, and all the other models which show no snow here).

There is definitely a point of diminishing returns with snow... and there is such a thing as too much snow.   I think Andrew and I both got there in February 2019.

Yeah, it’s true. You had an insane storm, and got an unbelievable amount of snow at once. We never had a big storm, but just consistent snow that literally built up a snowpack. With layers from melting, refreezing, rain, and more snow. Given the length of our driveway it was impossible to keep up with and though the snow was about 2’ on the ground it was about 35-40” on the roof of the shop. Which I didn’t realize until I got up there when it started collapsing...

Kinda snotty way to talk to a relatively new poster.

I thought that person has been around for a long time.   If its someone who is new to tracking weather or someone really young then I should definitely change my responses.    I read it as just the usual complaining on here.   Either way... that Sacramento forecast should make them feel better.   Its not really an AR of snow across CA.

You probably wouldn't like it as much as you think.

I was skiing at Mt Hood Meadows during what was supposed to be the big 1950/1969 repeat in January 2020. Blowing snow, super low visibility, 70 MPH gusts. It was absolutely amazing and I really wish I could experience conditions like that more often. The walk from the lodge to the car in the backup lot was an experience.

Take that however you want to.

Can really see the snow on the radar in western kitsap peninsula and hood canal getting pushed up on the Olympics.

Not missing much it's snowing here but not sticking and I'm at 650 ft. I had green over me with just light snow. Temp is down to 33 .

Sounded to me like a young person who is learning about weather.  He did describe it as an AR.  But who knows.  It just sounded snotty.

Yeah the 20” of snow at my place after January 10, 2017 (though definitely less snow than your case) was pretty for a while but after a week or so it turned into this gross slushy mess that wasn’t too welcome. Still, the actual storm was incredible.

The gusts are a bit stronger this last 30-40 minutes.

Also I believe this is the first sub-freezing high of the season. Maxed at 31. That's a cold wind chill, anyone outdoors hopefully bundled up.

So there have been preference wars about preferred kinds of weather fairly frequently on this forum.  But I'm wondering is there anyone posting or lurking on here who does NOT like snow?  It seems we are all snow starved, snow loving people. And there is never too much snow!

I moved from a relatively snow starved place to a place that averages 90 inches.  Never get tired of snow in December.    The later you get in winter, the less exciting it gets, but still beautiful to watch.  But with a small snowfall, like 2 or 3 inches, you hardly notice it, especially later in the winter.  Though never as exciting as snow in Western Washington, since there it is an event, the busted snow disappointments are not a big seal because you know there will be more chances soon.

Yeah, when a snow storm busts here on the west side it is very disappointing...we never know if we'll get another chance the rest of winter.  And some winters we don't get anything at all.  Maybe I'll have to move some day.

Yeah that's the hard part.  Not "wait till next week", it's "wait till next year, or the year after".  I am still bitter about the busted winter storm warning for 6-8 inches of snow Christmas Eve night to Christmas morning 1983.  It rained.  Would have been, even today, the best snowstorm of my life.  Not the amount, though that is good too, but the timing would have been perfect, especially since there was just a little bit of snow already on the ground.

Ended up with 4" on the grass, 3.5" on surfaces in Philomath, more like 2.5" in Corvallis.  Quite a pleasant surprise given the predictions!  Not a great day on Highways 20 and 22 to the coast - one of my friends was stuck for two hours between multiple wrecks and jackknifed trucks.

Nice event! Philomath is a beautiful area. Wonder how much Alsea got.

Never heard of Philomath... had to look it up.    Looks like a really nice place.

Just about 2.5" in West Salem at just over 400'. Temp went from 38 to 32 in 75 minutes.

Still at 32f with light rain.

Nice surprise

With gradients going flat in the mid-valley, looks like some kind of an inversion has now set up.
