Total snow per the 12Z ECMWF... obviously the stage is set for the good stuff beyond day 10.

Still plenty of time for some regional action to develop going in tho.

Edit: Good lord my seizures have been terrible the last 48 hrs. Hard to type these out but maybe Feb is the new wheelhouse?

It’s always best to get the first blast through the front door then second blast in back door for coldest temps but best snows happen with back door blast first then front door.  Problem is that you risk having nasty ice storm instead

Backdoor is usually better for snow in western OR. February 1993, early February 2014, and the late February 2019 event were strictly backdoor.

That 4-seamer keep you in shape? Your rock-solid performance against a trash Willamina team near where I lived in those days was awesome. Both Sheridan and Willamina may as well shut down their football and baseball teams. They are often amongst the worst in the state.

Sorry noob question but whats the difference between a backdoor and frontdooR blast

Basically front door blasts come down from the North or even Northwest and are usually accompanied by more moisture while the cold moves in. Backdoor blasts push in from the East and usually start very dry.

Yes, the teams in the west valley and the Yamhill River area are notoriously some of the poorest school districts that just don't care about athletics and students are apathetic since the cities always vote down school bonds then wonder why kids bail town as soon as the opportunity arises.

Backdoor = Arctic air blasts into the east side of the Cascades, then is blown through Cascade gaps into the westside when an offshore low approaches

Frontdoor = Arctic air blasts into the westside and goes straight south

Backdoors are so strong they can be mountain wave events where the gradient is so intense that instead of air coming through the Gorge, it blows all the way over the Belknap Gap and all the way down the McKenzie River here instead for example.

Some call it a cross-Cascade gradient or a CCG on here.

What is showing on the Euro today is a bit of a tweener I think, in that a fair amount of the cold is coming thru the Fraser river gorge.  A full on backdoor blast will pile the cold air up against the cascades with the Columbia gorge being the main outlet to the west.  In these cases the Fraser river cold is negligible and northwestern Washington doesn't get as cold.  Is that correct?

Seems like models are agreeing on some kind of Arctic air intrusion into the US around February 5. The cold is finally on our side of the pole.

Only question is which side of the Rockies it ends up on.

Or what side of the house if you really want to start splitting weenies.

That's exactly correct. Portland is often colder than Bellingham in backdoor blasts but front door blasts sometimes never really reach Portland at all.

Wow!  I had a 16K in college.  Nice work!  dDesn't matter what level.  That's a good days work!

Most I had in college was 14, against Edmonds CC, over 8 innings.

Most in competitive games was 18 (7 innings)

I was 14 and on a 14U team, but we were playing against a 13U team. The field for this particular game was 54' mound and 80' bases. The only hit I allowed was a popup between first and second that the dinguses didn't communicate on.

Fun times, but totally unfair to the kids I was pitching to.
