It looks like it just has to do the handling of the ridge and how it reorganizes itself in the long run. The vast majority keep a block held steady at 145W (give or take 5 degrees).

Do you mean the "new" GFSv16?  Because that was showing it, now it is not.  Would be very interesting if it did indeed show the way, only to abandon it later on.

I don't mean to insinuate anything here, but usually you don't see cold snaps unless models all trend better within ten days. That's from my admittedly amateur experience watching these things since 2014.

Really nice look on the GFS 18z by 210hr. Further west with the GOA ridge allows the backdoor shot to come further west. Nice 1047mb high near the border by 222hr with weak gradients.
